Job Description

This position reports directly to the Department Head and provides overall leadership and responsibility for department financial and business operations. The position provides direct leadership of the administrative and business operations of the department including financial management, budgeting, accounting, purchasing, compliance and control, payroll, travel, human resources, sponsored research, inventory, IT, facilities, and staff supervision. This position also assists in department strategic planning.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, higher education administration, or closely related field. In lieu of a Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting or closely related field with extensive financial management experience. Prior supervisory experience. Strong problem solving and decision making abilities and ability to exercise good judgement, make decisions, set priorities, interpret policies and procedures, work independently and communicate effectively. Effective project management skills and experience, with ability to organize, perform and supervise a large volume of varied management tasks. Knowledge of sponsored research financial management. Ability to work independently and provide direction to others. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. |Knowledge of a complex financial system such as Banner. Ability to manipulate and summarize data from a large database.

Preferred Qualifications

Capacity to think in innovative ways regarding financial matters that affect the department. Experience using Google apps. Experience with Virginia Tech academic unit (e.g. department, college) business affairs.
