Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Occupational Health and Safety, the Industrial Hygienist develops and implements industrial hygiene programs to address the evaluation and control of health hazards for employees of Virginia Tech. Serves as subject matter expert with regard to industrial hygiene evaluations and controls, and acts as a consultant to the university community for related issues. Uses data, interviews and worksite reviews to identify similar exposure groups, determines best sampling methodology, performs monitoring, determines best control options, and issues reports of findings to covered entities. Uses highly complex criteria, data collection, and interviewing techniques. Interprets and applies regulatory requirements, and provides guidance to staff. Recommends procedural and/or resource changes to management. Applies knowledge, training or experience to facilitate resolution of assigned cases, determine recidivism and develop appropriate action. Develops abatement procedures to remedy problems. Uses measuring devices and instruments requiring analytical skill and a high degree of judgment.

Required Qualifications

- B.S. in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health or related field or experience and training equivalent to an advanced degree.
- Working knowledge of industrial hygiene project design, evaluation, sampling, analysis and remediation practices.
- Working knowledge of the interpretations, technical principles, practices, and procedures used to comply with industrial hygiene related OSHA regulations and industry standards.
- Experience performing noise, chemical, and particulate monitoring.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write technical reports and related professional correspondence.
- Ability to act independently and as a team member.
- Strong computer software skills.
- Must be able to obtain Industrial Hygienist Certification within 5 years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

- M.S. in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health or related field or experience and training equivalent to an advanced degree.
- Experience providing industrial hygiene services in a university environment.
- Experience developing and providing employee training programs.
- Experience evaluating and testing ventilation systems.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist

Additional Information

- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Moderate physical activity.
- Requires pushing, pulling, and safely moving and handling of objects up to 60 pounds.
- Must have a criminal background check.
- Must have a driver's license check. Emergency Personnel health & safety-related.
- Must be able to wear respiratory protection and must participate in the university medical surveillance program as needed or required.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
