Assistant Professor - Hebrew Bible - Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures

The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Hebrew Bible at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Prospective candidates should have strong methodological and philological skills in biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, as well as a textual research focus and proven competence in dealing with the Bible's composite texts. A grounding in relevant languages and scripts of the ancient Near East and adjacent receptive cultures is desirable. Engagement with scholarship in one or more additional fields in the humanities and/or social sciences is also preferred; these fields may include (but are not restricted to) literary criticism, gender and queer theory, anthropology, historiography, folklore, history of religion, or history of sexuality. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to cooperate with other faculty in the department to enhance course offerings, and to collaborate with Hebrew and Jewish Studies faculty who work in later periods to create a diverse curriculum and rebuild Berkeley's Hebrew program. We invite the holder of this position to dialogue with scholars in other units, such as the Center for Jewish Studies, the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion, the Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Designated Emphasis (DE) in Gender, Women and Sexuality, or the DE in Critical Theory. An engagement with the Hebrew Bible as a foundational document of cross-cultural importance is desirable. The person appointed should demonstrate a commitment to teaching, and strong potential for effectiveness as an instructor and mentor.

We encourage applications from individuals who will contribute to diversity in higher education, and in the field of biblical studies in particular. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at UC Berkeley and at the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. Successful candidates for our faculty position will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.

The University is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty and has a number of policies and programs in place to support employees as they balance work and family.
