Job Summary

Reporting to the CU Boulder Vice Chancellor for Advancement and the Athletic Director, this position participates in creating and deploying the strategic fundraising and constituent engagement direction in support of the university mission and Athletic Department priorities. Key focus areas include campaign management, fundraising strategy and operations, alumni and constituent engagement, and community building. This is accomplished through setting the vision and priorities, as well as leading, all aspects of the Buff Club Advancement team.

The position works collaboratively with the Athletic Department and Advancement to support the respective goals for all partners and advancement/athletic enterprises and may serve on leadership teams in Athletics and Advancement. Additional expectations include close collaboration with campus- and system-wide partners in achieving CU fundraising, engagement, and reputation goals. The successful hire will need to be an organized, cohesion-based team builder who displays strong leadership, managerial, and supervisory skills. This individual will need a proven track record of success in developing, creating and leading a highly-motivated staff of fundraising professionals.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Provides executive leadership and management of Buff Club staff, working in collaboration with leaders and partners across the CU system and CU Boulder campus, including within Athletics and Advancement.
  • Establishes the strategic direction, goals, and objectives for Athletics advancement efforts in key goal areas, including fundraising, engagement, and reputation.
  • Collaborates with campus and system Advancement partners to sustain and increase relationships with current and prospective donors to achieve department goals, including managing a small portfolio of prospective and current supporters ($1M+).
  • Facilitates productive relationships daily between prospective and current supporters, CU leaders, athletics personnel, faculty and staff to ensure effectiveness of programs and progress toward goals.
  • Builds, maintains and nurtures a high-functioning team ensuring Buff Club efforts are consistent, coordinated, effective, and in compliance with all guidelines, policies, laws, and standard methodologies.
  • Plans, hosts, and/or attends events on campus and throughout the country, including select athletics and advancement receptions, ceremonies, and games. Significant evening and weekend activities that can be balanced with compensated time-off during traditional work hours.
  • Represents Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Athletic Director, as appropriate.

  • Travel is required for this position.

What We Can Offer
  • The salary range is $163,000 - $246,000 annually

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • 7 years’ experience in athletic program development and management, or equivalent experience
  • 7 years’ experience in major or principal gift efforts, or equivalent experience
  • 7 years’ supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience building a diverse team and sustaining an inclusive and equitable work environment
What You Will Need
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Skilled in navigating donor tracking software (Advance, Salesforce, Paciolan, BSR, etc).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accomplish business objectives
  • Ability to travel throughout Colorado, the U.S., and possibly internationally
  • Ability to develop budgets and manage complex fiscal operations
  • Expert knowledge of Advancement strategies and operations
  • Expert knowledge of strategic planning and goal-setting
  • Ability to learn and follow fundraising and engagement policies and procedures, including direct mail, crowdfunding, event management, and portfolio management strategies and techniques
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn nonprofit accounting and Internal Revenue Service rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn NCAA rules and regulations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and smartphone skills
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • 10+ years working in major or principal gift fundraising
  • 10+ years working in a tier-one research university that pursues athletics and academic excellence
  • Experience working in fundraising, engagement, or communication efforts at a Division I university
  • Former student-athlete and/or passionate about the value of athletics in the college experience
