The mission of the Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Education is to create a community of educators who link efforts in multicultural education to social justice actions that promote social reform in the wider community through shaping educational practice, policy, and research. We foster this by creating an academic community in which democratic leadership, open dialogue, authentic collegiality, and collaboration are valued. We prepare students to serve diverse populations in formal and informal educational settings. We facilitate the study of language and literacy in conjunction with the study of the cultural, social, political, and economic contexts in which educational events and practices are embedded. Our faculty work actively to effect change through outreach to diverse communities in New Jersey, the nation, and the world.

Position Details:

The College of Education invites applicants for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Social Studies Teacher Education at the secondary level. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship is grounded in a sociocultural theoretical framework and explicitly addresses issues of equity, access, and social justice. The successful candidate will teach courses in the department’s undergraduate and graduate level Subject Matter.

Education programs, which lead to NJ teaching certification in Social Studies. The position may include online and off-campus instruction, program coordination of one of the Subject Matter Education teacher certification programs (with course reassignment), and clinical practice supervision. The successful candidate should have an active research agenda that addresses issues of equity, access, and social justice framed by critical or sociocultural perspectives.

Position duties also include contributing to service at the department, college, and university levels.

Required Qualifications:
  • An earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution of higher education in education or a closely related field by September 1, 2022
  • At the Assistant Rank, demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • At the Associate Rank, demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service as well as a record of success in securing external funding to support scholarship
  • Strong, explicit commitment to educational equity and social justice and experience working in diverse settings with students and families
  • At least 3 years’ teaching experience at the middle/high school level in Social Studies
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in an environment devoted to collaboration, collegiality, professional development, diversity, scholarly inquiry, student learning, civic responsibility, and respect for all people
  • A teaching and learning philosophy consistent with the Rowan University and College of Education missions
  • Advanced technological literacy with demonstrated abilities to infuse technology into instruction
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with higher education teaching in multiple formats, including online and supervision of teacher candidates
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
  • Knowledge of NJDOE initiatives and certification standards/processes, including edTPA
  • At the Assistant Rank: 3-4 years of experience as an assistant professor with a commitment to future leadership roles in the program.
  • At the Associate Rank: experience with program coordination or leadership with a willingness to lead at the program level.
Starting Date: September 1, 2022
