The college

CMC is a comprehensive, public, open-access dual-mission institution offering 136 academic programs ranging from specialized certificates to associate and bachelor’s degrees, a wide range of online, non-credit and lifelong learning courses, as well as extensive concurrent enrollment opportunities in close partnership with neighboring school districts.

Over 15,000 students attend CMC annually, and 40% of degree-seeking students earn a certificate or degree every year. The college’s Latinx enrollment has doubled in six years to 28%, making CMC a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). CMC courses are highly personal and many are experiential by design, each with a maximum registration of 25 students.

Colorado Mountain College campuses are located in Aspen, Carbondale, Breckenridge, Dillon, Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, Leadville, Rifle, the Vail Valley, and Salida. Of these locations, three are residential — Spring Valley, Leadville, and Steamboat Springs — and students in Breckenridge have access to college-owned off-campus housing. CMC campuses are close-knit communities, on average serving between 1,000 – 2,000 students.

The majority of the college’s financial support comes from local property taxes, not tuition or state revenues. Consequently, CMC is uniquely positioned to be entrepreneurial, nimble, mission-focused, and responsive to community and workforce needs. The college’s Central Services administrative office, which provides administrative support to all campus locations, is located in historic downtown Glenwood Springs, the town from which CMC originally launched in 1965.

The position

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the college’s most visible, future focused, and creative suites of programs. The Dean of the Isaacson School of Communication, Arts and Media oversees faculty and programs including CMC’s renowned professional photography degree, cutting edge digital media and graphic design degrees and certificates, the arts and the college’s signature culinary and hospitality programs. The next dean will model and advance the ideals of the school’s namesake, Walter Isaacson: “Vision without execution is hallucination...Skill without imagination is barren. Leonardo [da Vinci] knew how to marry observation and imagination, which made him history’s consummate innovator.”

To this end, the Dean provides that “insatiably curious” instructional leadership, innovation, and administration of the programs included within the Isaacson School portfolio. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, collaborates closely with the college president, campus leaders, academic supervisors, and faculty on curriculum consistency and instructional integrity among all campuses. The Dean collaboratively assists with all areas of the college to facilitate student academic success, strategic partnerships with industry and workforce partners, and meaningful relationships within and across the mountain resort communities CMC serves.

Responsibilities include collaborative planning, staffing, developing, promoting and assessing programming and related services to support a positive learning environment, and ensure consistency of practice within the disciplines across the College. The Dean may also handle program planning and directing. The Dean supervises full-time faculty within School disciplines in matters related to academic integrity, curriculum, academic, assessment, academic consistency, and accordingly assists adjunct faculty and support staff, as appropriate, at multiple locations in collaboration with campus academic leads. The Dean also supports campus leaders and the school by facilitating meaningful connections within the arts, media, and communications industries to advance experiential learning opportunities for students.

Moreover, the Dean will help lead the school in advancing its efforts both regionally and nationally to be known for its cutting-edge training in each of these fields. Qualified individuals may be those with faculty or academic administrative experience, or may be individuals with storied experiences in the arts, media and communications industries.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Education and experience sufficient for the rigors of the position. Examples may include a Master’s Degree in a discipline relative to the programs within the school and a minimum of two years teaching experience in higher education and two years academic administrative experience preferred, or equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.

Special Skills or abilities directly applicable to the position: Assessing self-learning and progressing toward established personal and professional goals. Demonstrating creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Communicating effectively in personal and group settings that may be both in-person and through technology. Provide Management and oversight of full-time faculty in multiple locations to ensure consistency in teaching and learning practices, and assessment across the school disciplines. Contributing to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive working and learning environment. Effecting change and demonstrating flexibility and positive leadership. Acquiring and applying technology to working and learning. Demonstrating an understanding of teaching and learning techniques and pedagogy. Demonstrated fundraising, successful program development, and strategic relationship building strongly preferred.
