Community Engagement Specialist

Position Summary

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute ( CTSI ) and its Clinical and Translational Science Award ( CTSA ) represent a large NIH infrastructure grant to support clinical and translational research at the University at Buffalo (UB) and the Buffalo Translational Consortium ( BTC ) partner institutions under the leadership of the Director of the CTSI . The Community Engagement Specialist is a full-time professional position who will:

Lead the development and implementation of program deliverables and be responsible for on-going project management. This position will consult with researchers and community partners with an emphasis on the design and implementation of community-based recruitment strategies (including the Buffalo Research Registry), grant development, and project development. This position will develop innovative community education and outreach initiatives, culturally-informed approaches to engage community members to participate in and guide research, and creative community-based recruitment and retention strategies. This position will report directly to the Core Director and will work collaboratively with other CTSI cores, institutional partners, and community partners.

The Community Engagement Specialist position includes the following responsibilities:

• Play an active role in the integration of research, training and engagement initiatives within the CTSI Community Engagement hub by working with the core leadership, UB community and stakeholders.
• Work with the Community Engagement staff and leadership to administer Community Engagement Studios.
• Responsible for coordinating and evaluating all the programmatic activities for the CTSI Community Engagement hub including but not limited to CTSI -specific online training modules, seminars, workshops as well as outreach training modules and new courses when appropriate.
• Assist with dissemination of findings to relevant communities.
• Track Community Engagement programs and activities, contribute to reports and participate in the development and conduct of projects that evaluate Community Engagement programs and activities.
• Make occasional trips related to CTSI activities.
• Assist with progress report and grant submissions as needed.
• Anticipate what needs to be done and initiate action towards that goal.

Other activities as outlined by the Core Director, Principal Investigator (PI) and/or Chief Operating Officer ( COO ).

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience with developing community education and outreach programs
• Experience with clinical or community based research research
• At least three years of relevant experience
• After taking directives, be able to work independently and yet be able to promptly seek help if encountering barriers preventing the accomplishment of the assigned tasks
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and willingness to work with large and diverse teams within the CTSI, the medical field and the community

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field
• Five or more years of relevant experience
• Experience at UB in an academic and/or research environment
• Experience in community-based research
• Experience with SPSS and/or Atlas TI/REDCap other technology platforms
