The University of Houston Libraries seeks to recruit a strategic leader for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Student Engagement. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this key leadership position is a newly created portfolio as part of a recent organizational restructure that will position UH Libraries to advance the teaching and research mission of a dynamic research university. The portfolio includes the Information and Access Services Department, Research Services Department, and the Teaching and Learning Department. Together, these units will work collaboratively to enhance learning and research with welcoming and technology-rich spaces, support information literacy education efforts for undergraduate and graduate programs and co-curricular learning experiences in support of student success, and advance the university’s research goals by partnering with faculty, staff, and students across the research and learning lifecycle. The successful candidate will provide vision and strategic goals for building a collaborative and integrated approach to library roles and responsibilities that connect to the university’s strategic plan. They will also be responsible for managing and regularly assessing policies, protocols, and practices across these units to advocate for and to ensure effective application of enterprise-wide services across Libraries.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Libraries’ senior administrative team, consisting of a total of four associate deans. The associate deans will work in a team based and highly collaborative environment on idea generation, strategic planning, budgeting, and decision making to ensure employees, services, and spaces achieve the university’s goals. There will be opportunities to build skills in the areas of budget formulation and planning, and space assessment and planning.

Librarians at UH hold academic rank pursuant to the University of Houston Librarians’ Bylaws Document. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. The UH Libraries support the ongoing professional development of librarians and seek to recruit individuals committed to continuous learning and growth.

Salary: $145,000 to 150,000 expected hiring range, depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement programs including TIAA; tax-deferred annuity program available; release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.

Qualifications :

Required
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in and out of the Libraries
  • Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse and inclusive organization
  • Demonstrated success with goal setting and strategic planning for units
  • Experience with teaching and learning, or student success, or research services
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and build campus partnerships
  • Familiarity with the research landscape in higher education with an understanding of the research library’s role in that environment
  • Familiarity with trends and best practices in information literacy
  • Supervisory experience
Preferred
  • Experience with fostering inclusive and accessible spaces
  • Experience supporting curricular and co-curricular campus academic initiatives
  • Familiarity with key research services areas such as digital humanities, open access publishing, and data management and curation
  • Budgeting experience
  • Experience supporting employee professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership development
  • Familiarity with project management principles
