The Department of English at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Black Studies with a focus on African American literatures and Black feminist thought. We invite candidates who study any historical period and are open to comparative and/or transnational approaches, especially candidates whose research and teaching interests include African diaspora literatures (Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx).

The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s curriculum in African American literatures as well as department offerings in feminist theory and/or LGBTQIA studies. The position will also involve the development of new graduate courses in the department’s Critical Studies of the Americas research area. The search committee will look for an established publication record or the promise of excellent publication as well as evidence of effective teaching. The Department of English is a dynamic department offering an M.A. and Ph.D. in English; an M.F.A. and Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing; and a doctoral concentration in Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy. Qualifications :
  • Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, African American, Africana studies or related field by start of the appointment

  • Publication: Established record or promise of excellent publications
  • Teaching: Evidence of effective teaching
