Towson University (TU) has partnered with WittKieffer to conduct the search for a visionary and passionate leader for its inaugural Associate Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies (APR&D). This leadership role provides exciting opportunities for an ambitious and collaborative individual to develop a clear research vision that is consistent with the mission of the university while leading and elevating the university's interdisciplinary research activities across a diverse array of programs, ideas and people. The new APR&D will advance the transformative role that research can play in the lives of students, opening up the university intellectually and inspiring the faculty and students to engage in creating a productive research environment.

TU is Maryland's university of opportunities and is known as a leader in academic excellence, research, and discovery. With more than 150 years of experience creating opportunities, TU is one of only a handful of institutions where graduation and retention rates are the same for all students - the result of a deeply inclusive culture with a focus on equity among all students, faculty and staff. TU was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top 100 for public national universities for the second year. Previously, TU had been ranked regionally in the north, but a change to the Doctoral/Professional Carnegie classification moved the University into the national rankings. TU has increased its regional and national reputation through its focus on student learning, innovative programs, and pedagogies; faculty creativity and scholarship; applied and sponsored research; community service and outreach to business; education; and non-profit and health care organizations. Located on a 330-acre campus in Towson, Maryland, just ten miles from Baltimore's Inner Harbor and a short drive or train ride to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia or New York City, Towson offers unmatched opportunities to engage with the state and federal government, elected officials, worldwide embassies, think tanks, the national media and other influencers of public policy in addition to endless cultural, recreational and entertainment attractions.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic and Student affairs, the APR&D is a critical part of the university's leadership team and a visible leader within the university and greater Baltimore area. The APR&D will develop and enact a strategic vision to reach TU's goal of becoming an R2 institution, with a keen eye to the simultaneous enhancement of needed infrastructure to support the university's growing research activity. The new APR&D will have experience growing research support from multiple sources including federal, state, industry and foundation organizations and entities while, most importantly, capitalizing on TU's proximity to the myriad of federal agencies located in Washington, D.C. and the region.

A skilled collaborator, this leader will promote an understanding and drive for new research opportunities, working with the university deans on all aspects of research and graduate education to ensure alignment with their specific disciplines, while supporting innovative graduate programs and scholarly activity. The APR&D will also be responsive to the needs of all faculty, staff and students while facilitating research development and prioritizing inclusivity, integrity, and communication. This position will provide direction and change management to the administrative and professional staff within the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research and the Office of Graduate Studies with transparency, collegiality and mentorship. In addition, the APR&D will be responsible for administering the budget, raising funds and evaluating the resources necessary to maintain an equitable research learning environment.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received by January 18, 2022. Candidates should provide, as two separate attachments, a curriculum vitae and a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile. These materials, as well as inquires and nominations, should be sent via e-mail to the WittKieffer consultants supporting this search, Jen Meyers Pickard, Ph.D. and Lauren Bruce-Stets at TowsonAPRD@wittkieffer.com.
