FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant Professor

COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES

 

The Public Health Sciences Undergraduate Program, within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applicants for two full-time, nine-month tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek scholars with expertise in Health Equity and/or in Health Education and Promotion, with a focus in the area of Health Disparities. The position expectations include active engagement in research, teaching, advising and service. These 9-month positions begin in the Fall of 2022.

 

The Public Health Sciences Undergraduate Program, currently an applicant for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health, is a fast-growing major committed to preparing students for careers in health-related fields. The core curriculum integrates social, behavioral and analytic areas of public health and population health sciences. Faculty in these positions will have a unique opportunity to expand the program mission and vision to include research in public health, including mentoring PhD students through the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Interprofessional Ph.D. program. There are abundant opportunities for inter-professional collaborations with the Vermont Department of Health, the UVM Medical Center, UVM Health Network, UVM Cancer Center, UVM Larner College of Medicine, and the UVM College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include:

  • Maintaining an active research agenda, pursuing extramural funding, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Teaching and advising in the undergraduate Public Health Sciences program;
  • Collaborating with Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences faculty and staff in program development, scholarship and service;
  • Collaborating and engaging in department governance as well as service and outreach activities at the college, university, regional, state, national and international levels.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a doctoral degree with expertise in Public Health, Health Equity, or Health Education (CHES certification highly desirable) by the start of appointment. Applicants should also have a record of research and scholarly accomplishments. Strong consideration will be given to applicants with postdoctoral training, however, doctoral candidates in the process of completing their dissertation are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to diversity and social justice, as well as show excellence in undergraduate teaching and employ innovative and inclusive practices in the classroom.

The College

The college is home to more approximately 1200 students in eight different health professions comprising seven undergraduate and six graduate degree programs including an interdisciplinary PhD. The College is committed to inter-professional education and practice and educational innovation.  We are part of an academic health sciences center including Vermont’s tertiary care hospital, the Larner College of Medicine and a state of the art interdisciplinary clinical simulation laboratory, within proximity to the University campus.

 

The Department

The Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences is part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (https://www.uvm.edu/cnhs/bhsc).  The successful candidate will join a department with tenure track, clinical faculty, lecturers and staff that are dedicated to educating the nearly 300 undergraduate students and 15 graduate students in our programs.  Program offerings include undergraduate majors in Public Health Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Medical Radiation Science and an MLS Master’s degree.

 

The Community
UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.
