Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies

Job Description: The Louisiana State University School of Music invites applications for a tenure-track position, Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies, with appointment to begin in Fall 2022. We seek artist-performers and teachers with demonstrated ability to attract students who value learning in an engaged, personalized, collaborative, and inspiring School culture.

 

Responsibilities: Teach applied jazz at all levels and in all degree programs; depending on qualifications, teach relevant jazz courses in history, theory, arranging/composition, and pedagogy; lead ensembles (chamber jazz and big band); advise graduate students; recruit and retain excellent student musicians; build and maintain a national and international profile as performer and teacher; perform with the LSU jazz faculty; participate in faculty governance; and contribute broadly to the artistic and educational milieu of a major flagship university School of Music.

 

Minimum qualifications: A doctorate in jazz performance or related area or equivalent professional experience; distinguished record as a performer; demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching a broad range of students of diverse identities and backgrounds; and commitment to contributing to an academic and artistic community reflective of LSU’s rich regional and national demographics.

 

Preferred qualifications: Principle performing area from among jazz bass, trumpet, and trombone, although consideration will also be given to vocalists and drum set players with strong backgrounds in other areas of the jazz curriculum; demonstrated evidence of leadership potential, ability to build relationships, problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial capabilities.

The LSU School of Music offers a comprehensive program to nearly 500 music majors. It has 50 full-time faculty, 10 professional staff, and 75 graduate teaching assistants. In addition to the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera, the School of Music features strong band, orchestra, jazz, vocal, keyboard, and chamber music programs, as well as a robust research component in music education, composition, musicology, and music theory. The School sponsors over 300 recitals, concerts, operas, masterclasses, and lectures each academic year. Degrees offered include the Ph.D. (with concentrations in composition, experimental music and digital media, music education, musicology, and music theory), DMA (concentrations in music performance, collaborative piano, and choral, orchestral, and wind conducting,), MM, BM, BME, and BA (Liberal Arts). LSU also has an innovative and collaborative media arts community; The Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) includes Experimental Music & Digital Media, Digital Media Arts & Engineering, and Digital Arts, offering opportunities to compose for video games, digital animations, and film.

LSU has an enrollment of over 33,000 students. Baton Rouge supports a thriving performing arts scene, including the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, several dance companies, various eclectic concert series, and a professional theatre company.
