Responsibilities:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University is seeking a Laboratory Manager within the department. The Laboratory Manager operates and maintains large-scale structural, infrastructure, and mechanics-based testing laboratories, including use of hydraulic testing equipment and data acquisition systems; conducts large-scale structural and materials testing, including experimental test specimen design, test preparation and set-up, test execution, data interpretation, and specimen disassembly; assists faculty and students with corroborating analyses and field testing; assists faculty and students in proposal, report, paper, and presentation preparation; trains students and staff in the use of facilities and equipment; attracts, oversees, and executes all contract testing activities; and facilitates all education and outreach activities in the laboratory. Responsibilities encompass facility operations and maintenance, including operation and oversight of machine shops, control rooms, staging areas, testing areas, loading docks, overhead cranes, and all laboratory equipment and facilities associated with large-scale structural and materials testing; establishing laboratory policies and protocols in conjunction with the department; overseeing safety on site in laboratories; and serving as primary contact with external vendors. The Laboratory Manager works both individually and in groups to achieve project objectives and interacts regionally and nationally with professionals in mechanics-based experimental and engineering. The Laboratory Manager especially leads activities in the CEE Infrastructure Engineering Laboratory on the Boston campus and the Laboratory for Structural Testing of Resilient and Sustainable Systems (STReSS Laboratory) on the Burlington campus. The Laboratory Manager also assists in the various other teaching and research laboratories within the department as needed. This position provides an opportunity to help shape the future of civil engineering through advancing research and education related to resilient and sustainable infrastructure, innovative materials, and new sensor technologies. The Laboratory Manager will be working within a dynamic department and university with faculty, staff, and students conducting world-class research and innovative educational programs at the forefront of civil and structural engineering.

Qualifications:
B.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 3-5 years of related experience, or M.S. (preferred), with up to 2 years' experience. Candidate should be self-motivated and self-directed. Ability to multi-task and work with several groups simultaneously. Experience with servo-hydraulic systems and controls, experience with data acquisition equipment preferred. Excellent computer skills including MATLAB, Labview, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office or similar. Ability to present technical information and conduct facility tours as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is required; an M.S. or Ph.D. degree is preferred
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of related experience is required with a B.S.; a minimum of 2-5 years of related experience is preferred with an M.S. or Ph.D.
  • Experience with servo-hydraulic systems and controls, experience with data acquisition equipment preferred
  • Excellent computer skills including MATLAB, Labview, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office or similar, or related software.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with several groups simultaneously; strong project management/organizational skills with attention to fine detail, commitment to quality
  • Ability to present technical information and conduct facility tours as needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral presentation, and written communication skills
  • Must demonstrate a professional presence and maturity in dealing with a variety of audiences, external and internal to the university
  • Must have a positive can-do attitude, flexibility, initiative, and ability to function effectively as member of a team in a dynamic and exciting work environment
