Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Information Literacy Librarian is part of Randall Library’s Research and Instructional Services division, which collaborates with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to provide information literacy instruction, assist with research, manage the library collection, and partner on programming, in alignment with the information needs of campus stakeholders. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with campus constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, and materials.

This position is responsible for contributing to UNCW student success by promoting information literacy knowledge and skills through the development of information literacy instruction materials; engagement with faculty, staff, and students in University College, English Composition and the Honors College; and coordination of information literacy faculty development programs.

This is an 11-month {JULY – MAY}, renewable, non-tenure track special faculty position reporting to the Associate Director of Research and Instructional Services.

Library faculty in the RIS division have the following key responsibilities:

• Collaborate with faculty and instructors to create, provide, and assess information literacy instruction for courses where information literacy skills are in development
• Consult with faculty and instructors on the development of research-based assignments
• Provide dedicated research assistance for the students, faculty, and staff of assigned academic units.
• Ensure that the library’s collections adequately support the curricular and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of assigned academic areas
• Engage with students, faculty, and staff of assigned academic units, including collaborative programming such as workshops, panel discussions, and exhibits.

As a library faculty member, this position will:
  • Provide in-person and on-call research help during scheduled Research Help Desk shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and chat
  • Support the mission and strategic plan of Randall Library and as such engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making
  • Participate in university and professional activities, including research, conference presentations, publications, service, and other evidence of scholarly activity
  • Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to Research and Instructional Services
  • Understand and promote Randall Library’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Upon initial appointment, this position will:
  • Act as liaison to University College, English Composition, and the Honors College
  • Develop and assist in delivering information literacy instruction for the core curriculum (First Year Seminar, Transfer Seminar, and English Composition)
  • Collaborate with the Director of University Studies, the University Studies Advisory Committee, and liaison librarians to align recommended information literacy concepts with practices at UNCW
  • Coordinate information literacy faculty development programs (e.g. Information Literacy Faculty Fellows)
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • ALA -Accredited Master’s degree in library and information sciences
  • Demonstrated teaching experience
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging practices, standards, and trends in early-career college student success
  • Experience teaching information literacy in higher education
  • Demonstrated awareness of resources and tools for research in assigned academic units
  • Experience with, or demonstrated ability to learn, the creation of asynchronous online learning objects using appropriate instructional technologies
  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Knowledge and understanding of emerging practices, standards, and trends relating to information literacy education in an academic library environment
  • Demonstrated strong service orientation and skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and colleagues
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, written, and virtual communication skills using a variety of media and technologies
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace

William Madison Randall Library supports the University’s mission through the provision of information resources, services and programs relevant to the needs of its students, faculty and staff. To accomplish this mission, the library provides (1) diverse collections of informational resources in multiple formats and specialized technologies to enable the creation of new knowledge; (2) efficient access to those informational resources and technologies; (3) assistance and instruction in identifying, evaluating and interpreting information; (4) a safe and comfortable facility which stimulates intellectual curiosity and reflective thinking; and (5) programs that connect scholars and interested individuals with information and expertise to inspire lifelong learning.

The library faculty in the Research and Instructional Services division of Randall Library collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged with the library at a level that supports their academic and scholarly success. RIS librarians plan, deliver, and assess information literacy instruction in consultation with faculty and instructors and play a key role in educating faculty and instructors on the information literacy needs of their students. Librarians in this division also support the information needs of faculty, staff, and students through one-on-one research consultations, assist in managing the library collection in assigned areas, and partner with stakeholders on programming. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, and materials
