Assistant Professor, Renewable Term, Rhetoric and Language

Job Summary:
The Department of Rhetoric and Language at the University of San Francisco invites applications for two (2) full-time renewable term Assistant Professor positions to begin August 2022, contingent upon funding approval. We seek candidates with expertise in Composition, Rhetoric, and/or Oral Communication who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and equity in education through teaching, service, scholarship, and/or advocacy. Ideal candidates complement existing programmatic priorities including multimodal rhetoric (digital/oral/written), linguistic justice, and developmental/multilingual writing. Position 1: Specialization in Rhetoric and Composition: We are especially interested in applicants who specialize in composition/writing studies with teaching, service, and research focus in cultural rhetorics, multilingualism, and/or antiracist pedagogies/assessment.

Position 2: Specialization in Rhetoric and Public Speaking/Oral Communication: We are especially interested in applicants who bring teaching, service, and research experience to areas such as rhetorics of race/racism/anti-racism, and/or critical/cultural approaches to rhetoric.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidates will be expected to teach three classes per semester in undergraduate rhetoric courses. The candidates will be expected to fulfill significant service to the department, college, or university, such as coordinating a center or a multi-section course in an area of expertise.

Term Faculty in the Department of Rhetoric and Language serve on multi-year renewable term contracts, are members of a full-time faculty union with collectively bargained salary and step increases, and are eligible for promotion to Associate and Full Professor after a requisite number of years of service.

Minimum Qualifications: a strong record of teaching at the university level; experience teaching multiple levels of rhetoric; ability to offer reflections on equity and evidence of strategies for success in engaging with BIPOC students; and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco. A Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree with an emphasis in Composition, Rhetoric, or Communication Studies is strongly preferred.
