Northern Michigan University is seeking applications for the position of Professor and Head of the Biology Department. This is a full time, 12-month, tenured administrative position that requires a Ph.D. in a biological science. The successful candidate will have an established record of excellence in teaching and research, in mentoring students, and in administering programs.
The Head of Biology is expected to manage the responsibilities of 16 tenure-track faculty and 5 non-tenure track faculty serving approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 30 M.S. students. They will advocate for the mission of the department. The Head will provide leadership in promoting strong educational programs, supporting research programs, and fostering diversity, equity and inclusion. A commitment to working cooperatively with university administration, facilitating multidisciplinary scholarship, and engaging in community outreach is essential. This is a campus based position.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education:

Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree

Discipline / Degree Area:

Biology, or a related field

Experience at an academic or biological research institution.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:

Ability to meet requirements for tenure and full professor.
Experience in research mentorship.
Evidence of administrative and leadership ability.
Demonstrated teaching effectiveness.
Effective skills in communication, seeking broad consultation and providing leadership for faculty and graduate assistants.
Ability to serve as a strong advocate for departmental interests and concerns.
Ability to manage departmental operations in a manner consistent with the bargaining unit agreement and departmental bylaws.
Commitment to promoting professional development of faculty members.
Commitment to supporting the development of the Biology curriculum and to encouraging innovative teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
A vision for promoting engagement with underrepresented groups and equity and inclusion.
Ability to supervise non-faculty departmental staff effectively.
Experience managing budgets.
