The University of Bridgeport is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Student Health Services . Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Student Health Services will oversee student health care and provide health and wellness education to University of Bridgeport students. The Director will supervise and monitor the quality of services in the student health center, review policies and procedures, ensure compliance with immunization and insurance regulations, and serve as a liaison to local hospitals and community health resources.

Additionally, the Director will design and implement prevention, wellness and community health education programs for the campus and create innovative ways of providing effective services and outreach to students.

This is a full-time position located in Bridgeport, CT.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directs and provides health services and programs for students, and staff and faculty as needed;
  • Develops and manages the health budget, maintains supplies, organizes and staffs facility;
  • Assess and treat patients, including follow-up care, as outlined in protocols, including appropriate consultations and referrals, (said protocols are reviewed and co-signed annually by the Director and the Medical Advisor);
  • Promotes health through individual and group education, offering programs focusing on health maintenance and wellness, illness and injury prevention;
  • Develops working relationships with college departments, students, area health agencies and collaborates with contractual health providers;
  • Advise the Dean of Students and Vice President of Administration and Finance on the Student Health Insurance Program;
  • Oversee management of student health insurance programs and resolve issues as appropriate;
  • Obtain and maintain health records for students, including immunization status, as required by the Connecticut Department of Public Health;
  • Administer immunizations as needed;
  • Perform specific laboratory procedures, (e.g. throat cultures, urine cultures, pregnancy tests, pap smears, STI’s, cultures, wet preps etc.);
  • Collaborate with additional University health clinics: Naturopathic, Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Dental;
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Health and Safety committee on issues relative to industrial hygiene and student safety in educational settings;
  • Serve in the on-call rotation;
  • Act as the coordinator, with appropriate authorities, on issues related to public health (i.e. infectious diseases) and develop institutional responses, as needed;
  • Oversee the management and follow through on student Medical emergencies;
  • Develop and maintain information systems for reporting relevant Student Health Service data;
  • Assume other duties assigned by the Dean of Students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years’ of progressively responsible nursing/health education experience;
  • Connecticut Registered Nurse Licensure required;
  • Certified in Connecticut to practice in the expanded role; including public health and/or experience in general health, gynecology and urgent care/emergency;
  • Significant clinical experience (including public health and/or experience in general health, gynecology and urgent care/emergency);
  • CPR certification;
  • Significant experience developing and administering department budget;
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining student health records and mandated health and privacy requirements;
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience over support staff and other staff as necessary;
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in the care of patients, the administration of emergency/first aid treatment and triage practice method;
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with an ethnically diverse student and staff population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Public Health, APRN or MSN;
  • Prescription authority from the State of Connecticut;
  • Experience as a college health care provider;
  • Specialization in primary health care.
