Under minimal supervision, with latitude for independent action and exercise of judgment, the Senior Systems Network Administrator is responsible for the creation, development, customization and maintenance of the enterprise systems environment supporting a highly complex platform with many mission critical applications. This position will report to the Infrastructure and Network Manager as well as the Director of Academic and Campus Technologies,

The incumbent must be have in-depth knowledge of multi-vendor systems architecture and be capable of managing high-performance, scalable, highly available computing platforms.

The main focus of the Senior Systems Network Administrator is to install, customize, maintain and support the main operating systems and network environment – with an emphasis on VMWare and Linux/UNIX operating systems, as well as Cisco networking products and associated supporting third party software and tools.

Primary Responsibilities: ​​​​​​

As Senior Systems Administrator, the incumbent will develop solutions that optimize the performance and management of the systems environment:
  • Perform general system support for VMWare, Solaris 8 and 10, Linux (multiple RH versions), Ubuntu 6-14, CentOS.
  • Continue to enhance technical knowledge and capabilities to develop a comprehensive understanding of the VM/Solaris/Linux/Windows environment and related tools and products
  • Diagnose and resolve VM and Solaris/Linux/Windows/Network/Radius system problems Install and maintain server systems and Solaris/Linux/Windows software
  • Provide input in the selection, implementation and support of systems performance and management tools and products (Aegis IAM, home grown scripting (PERL/BASH), IOS 12-15, EMC VNX, Fiber Channel, Brocade)
  • Perform third party product evaluations and provide recommendations
  • Perform systems troubleshooting and incident management for systems and products
  • Perform system enhancements: plan and perform/direct upgrades of operating systems and products
  • Develop, maintain and support reliable systems backup and disaster recovery strategy and procedures for VM-Linux/Windows systems
  • Develop documentation for VM, Linux, Solaris and Windows Systems
  • Develop, implement systems and performance management of VM and Solaris/Linux/Windows systems
  • Coordinate with colleagues, manager, and application developers to ensure that required features, release and version upgrades, and modifications are properly implemented
  • Conduct cost/benefit analysis to determine the feasibility of various systems configuration approaches
  • Assist in the review of problems and proactively escalates issues for resolution while understanding the major impacts to technical and business-related areas.
  • Provide recommendations and solutions that can be quickly implemented to correct the problem. Define and recommend systems standards and specifications.
  • Evaluate new technologies and software products to determine feasibility and desirability of incorporating into company systems environment
  • Must be able to work multiple projects concurrently and shift priorities as required to meet business requirements and deadlines.
  • Work closely with IT technical staff to ensure changes are implemented according to required business and IT technical specifications.
  • Ensure that IT, Change Control and operational procedures are followed for all production-related changes.
  • Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in order to meet the requirements of the job.
  • Master's degree in business, software engineering, computer sciences or related field preferred Eight or more years of practical, hands-on systems programming experience with VM technologies and Linux/UNIX systems.
  • Five years or more experience with Microsoft Windows server products

    • Applying REHL maintenance via Red Hat satellite service to Linux servers Clone Linux guests
    • VM Performance Toolkit

    • Nagios asset monitoring (develop and maintain)
    • EMC enterprise storage solutions
    • Technical products, vendors, and families of technologies and company hardware and software products.
    • Broad knowledge of HP/Dell/Cisco/Sun and vendor products and services
    • Systems and Network design principles and product configuration
    • Systems costing factors and costing estimate
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills for overall architecture and product design
    • Effective leadership skills to mentor and assist less experienced staff in VM, Linux and related systems, tools, and systems best practices
    • Strong communication skills to communicate with operations support personnel, application development personnel and management
    • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
    • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills required to interpret client business needs, application development needs, and identify and document appropriate technical solutions and production processes and procedures.
