Business Services invites applications for a Computer Systems Analyst II to serve as production assistant for the financial systems. This position serves as a project resource to all areas of the Business Services department. The Computer Systems Analyst II will be required to build and develop reports and queries in a timely fashion. Time frames will be set forth by the Systems Manager, and will be expected to be met in a reasonable manner.

Upon completion of training, this position will gain an understanding of financial systems and databases supported by the Systems Team; provide backup coverage for the system administrator for them as needed; provide webpage maintenance as instructed by each functional area within the Business Services office; and provide and support financial information report writing requests. This position will understand State of Montana and University of Montana accounting and data sources, and financial and vendor/student account transactions.

Key duties and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Schedule, process and verify all daily files from Banner and other external sources
  • Perform system assurance checks
  • Reconcile the daily state interface between Banner Finance and SABHRS
  • Coordinate the daily scheduling of the nightly production cycle
  • Manage daily and monthly production activities for the Banner Finance module (ie. Month end closing, asset depreciation, monthly reports)
  • Coordinate the notification and documentation of production information (issues, resolutions, changes, etc.) to all affected users, including batch processing, interface and potential defects with the Banner forms or job processes
  • Analyze system form/job processes to determine the cause of errors
  • Assist Finance Systems Analyst to resolve such issues
  • Perform scheduled and non-scheduled financial data reconciliations
  • Project management
  • Functional design
  • Software analysis, testing and documentation
  • Handle requests from all areas of Business Services (Accounting, Treasury, Student Accounts, Systems, Accounts Payable, and Procurement) and affiliate campuses’ Business Services offices
  • Serve as a consultant for tasks and processes that Business Services may need, including, but not limited to, developing, maintaining and managing detailed project work plans/production schedules regarding controlling project scope, accurately estimating necessary resources & deadlines and risk assessment
  • Direct cross-functional teams/staff; set and communicate performance expectations and constructive feedback.
  • Gain an understanding of financial systems and databases supported by the Systems Team
  • Provide backup coverage for the system administrator as needed
  • Provide webpage maintenance as instructed by each functional area within the Business Services office
  • Build, develop and support financial information report writing adhoc requests
  • Maintain ongoing support for module area MS-Access database queries
Required Skills
  • Professional oral, written, listening, interpersonal and presentation communication skills.
  • Experience with, and skill in the use of, spreadsheet, word processing, database and internet software such as Excel, Word, MS Access and web browsers.
  • Experience and understanding of relational databases and how they work, including the ability to create ad hoc queries/reports from the underlying tables and data structures.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills; ability to quickly identify and correct problems
  • Working knowledge of basic accounting functions.
  • Ability to use and understand SQL. SQL knowledge and experience will be preferred but not limited to Oracle SQL developer, and MS Access
  • Ability to gain a thorough understanding of all supported financial systems
  • Ability to learn the university’s financial data warehouse (UMDW) and provide departmental customer support. This will occur after the person understands the campus data setup and relationships.
  • Ability to successfully execute the essential duties of the role, which include:
    • Ability to manage daily and monthly production activities for the financial module of an integrated database application.
    • Ability to coordinate the notification and documentation of production information to users
    • Ability to analyze system form/job processes to determine the cause of errors or abort situations.
    • Ability to learn current and new software with the ability to train staff.
    • Ability to develop an understanding of the campus data setup and relationships.
    • Advanced ability to understand financial transactions, vendor/student account transactions.
    • Ability to multitask and handle data mining requests from all areas of Business Services.
    • Ability to thoroughly test and analyze new and existing software.
    • Ability to understand a chart of accounts


Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Banner and SABHRS data systems specifically financial related modules
  • Understanding of State and University accounting and data sources
  • Ability to engage in successful project management
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize project work
  • Ability to stay well organized
  • Knowledge of report writing and development in SQL, Oracle, MS Access applications

Position Details

Position Title: Computer Systems Analyst II

Position Number: 001750

Department: Business Services

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $23.84/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
