The
Department of English at Florida Atlantic
University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant
/Associate Professor position to begin August 2022. Candidates must
have primary teaching and research interests in Science
Fiction. Special consideration may be given to candidates who
also have secondary teaching and research interests in digital
humanities, new media, or game studies. Candidates with other
secondary fields will also be considered.

The English MA program has a concentration
in SF and Fantasy Studies, one of the only
such concentrations in the country. The new hire
will contribute substantially to this concentration in Science
Fiction and Fantasy. In addition, the new hire will contribute to
FAU’s Comparative Studies PhD program and may play a role in
the university’s developing Peace, Justice, and Human Rights
Initiative. The new faculty member will also have the opportunity
to participate in the
Center for the Future
Mind in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters,
headed by Dr. Susan Schneider, the William F. Dietrich
distinguished professor of philosophy in the Dorothy F. Schmidt
College of Arts and Letters, and a member of FAU’s Brain Institute.
The successful candidate will be eligible to join an existing
community of scholars through Florida Atlantic University’s
Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering
(I-SENSE,
http://isense.fau.edu). I-SENSE is a
university-wide innovation hub, leading fundamental research in
sensing, computing, communication, artificial intelligence, and
cryptography, with disciplinary-specific applications to
environmental science, health and behavior, urban planning
and design, infrastructure systems, and other application areas.
The I-SENSE mission is to catalyze a culture of research excellence
in sensing, smart systems, and their applications; to develop,
demonstrate, and operate solutions with high societal impact; and
to attract and support future generations of interdisciplinary
researchers and practitioners.
The hired candidate will teach on the Boca Raton
campus. We seek a candidate who will
balance high-quality scholarship, excellence in teaching,
and committed service. Faculty typically teach a 3-2 course
schedule. There will be the opportunity to teach and mentor
students in the Department’s MA and MFA programs, as well as in the
Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters’ interdisciplinary
PhD program, the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies’ MA and
undergraduate programs, and other interdisciplinary programs within
the College.

Minimum Qualifications:
PhD from an accredited institution in English or Comparative
Literature, or related field, at time of appointment, publication
record in field, and relevant teaching experience at the college
level.
