JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Health Science & Human Ecology at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for a position of Department Chair, tenured, at the rank of Full or Associate Professor to begin August 1, 2022, or sooner if the successful candidate is available. The position is a combination of a 12-month appointment as a three-quarters time Department Chair and an academic year appointment as a one-quarter time faculty member. The Department grants four BS degrees: Environmental Health Science, Health Services Administration, Public Health, and Nutritional Science and Dietetics. The Department currently offers two master's degrees: a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Community Health Education and a Master of Science in Health Services Administration (MSHSA), with a Master of Science in Nutrition Science to begin in Fall 2022. The application target date is September 20, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The Chair for the Department of Health Science & Human Ecology will work collaboratively with the faculty to provide leadership in performing a shared vision for the department. The Chair must be committed to diversity and inclusion in all its forms. The Chair will oversee the budget, support and encourage student success, create partnerships in the community, and celebrate faculty, staff, alumni, internship preceptors, and student achievements. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in facilitating long-term planning for professional involvement and development of the faculty and the Department, and mentor faculty effectively in meeting their responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. The Chair will represent the Department in requesting faculty, resources, and space from the College and University. The Department Chair will also be responsible to support and work with its faculty, staff, and students to maintain accreditation of various programs in the Department. The successful candidate will provide responsible and professional leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including supervision of support staff, scheduling courses, monitoring assessment plans, evaluating and mentoring faculty, fiscal management, and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research, and service activities. The Chair will also represent the Department, College, and University with on and off-campus constituencies and maintain positive public relations with these groups. In addition, the Chair is encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support achieving the goals of the University's strategic plan. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An earned doctorate degree (PhD, MD, DrPH) or other terminal degree from an accredited institution in Health Sciences or a related field is required by time of appointment.

  • Preference will be given to applicants in the areas of Environmental Health Science, Health Services Administration, Health Care Management, Nutritional Science and Dietetics, Global Health, Public Health Services Management, Biostatistics, Public Health Nutrition and/or Public Health.

  • Candidates should be qualified for appointment at the level of Full or Associate Professor, with strong preference for those who are qualified to be appointed as Full Professor.

  • The ideal candidate will be an experienced faculty member with demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, preferably in higher education, an established (preferably mature) record of scholarly research, evidence of excellence in teaching, including teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

  • Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of Health Science disciplines, and to community engagement.

  • The Chair must demonstrate transparency, a profound sense of professionalism, an unwavering ethical compass, and strong support for all aspects of public health and interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaboration.

  • Commitment for excellence, fostering harmony, enhancing diversity, and creating a welcoming and inclusive culture in the department are also very important.

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Candidates with previous leadership experience and demonstrated administrative skills are preferred, particularly past experience as a department chair.
    • Strong preference will be given to candidates who are qualified to be appointed at the full professor level.
    • Experience evaluating effective online teaching is preferred.
    • Past record of obtaining external funding is preferred.
    • Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued.
    • Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Department Health Science and Human Ecology serves over 800 students majoring in 4 undergraduate programs (Environmental Health Science, Health Services Administration, Nutritional Science and Dietetics, Public Health) and 2 graduate programs (Master of Public Health, Master of Science in Health Service Administration). Starting Fall 2022, the department will offer a third Master of Science degree program, in Nutrition Science. The newly hired chair/faculty member will join a well-established department of 13 tenure-line and over 20 adjunct faculty members. Our Department of Health Science and Human Ecology's Master of Public Health (MPH) program was ranked among the nation's top MPH programs, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2022 edition of Best Graduate Schools.
