Responsibilities

Mercer University is searching for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands in the Townsend School of Music. This is a 9-month, tenure track appointment. Rank will be determined based on the credentials of the final candidate selected. Primary responsibilities include conducting the Wind Ensemble and other chamber ensembles as well as overseeing the band programs of the university. The candidate will be expected to recruit, retain, and advise students for the Townsend School of Music. Additionally, the candidate will teach supporting music education courses, teach applied studio lessons and academic classes as assigned; all are contingent upon the candidate's qualifications and departmental needs. Academic duties will include instrumental conducting as well as supervision of music education majors. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the life of the department and university through service activities, advising students, completing scholarly or creative work in the field, and serving the broader community. The candidate will be an ambassador for the academic program in pursuit of spirit and excellence and will be expected to work collegially and collaboratively with the Townsend School of Music as a performer and educator.

Qualifications

A minimum of a doctoral degree in a music-related discipline from an accredited college/university is required, although ABD candidates will be considered at a lower rank. Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of three years of collegiate and secondary level teaching experience sufficient to supervise student teachers in the state of Georgia.

The successful candidate should have evidence of successful college-level studio and/or classroom teaching; conducting abilities of the highest artistic standard, excellent pedagogical skills and innovative vision; and have demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining students.
