Job Summary:
The Department of Neurological Surgery is seeking an Accountant to join their department. This position preforms budgeting, expense processing and reimbursement, financial analysis and reporting, internal controls, pre-award and post-award management responsibilities for departmental financial transactions connected to a diverse set of funding sources with complex rules, regulations and business practices. The position will interact and collaborate with the University, SMPH Dean's Office, UW Health, UWMF Finance, grant sponsors and other affiliated offices.
This position is a key position of the department administration team and the successful candidate will join a world-class institution and department that encourages, values and supports clinical care, research, teaching and community service.

-Bachelor's Degree is preferred with 2 or more years of finance, accounting, or related experience, OR
-3 years of experience in accounting, finance, or related field may be considered in lieu of degree
Qualifications:
Required Experience and Skills:
-Highly proficient in Microsoft Office including developing and maintaining spreadsheets in Excel and accounting applications.
-Ability to work effectively with different constituencies (i.e., faculty, staff, students, university administrators and funding agencies).
-Strong analytical and effective problem-solving and oral and written communication skills
-Ability to interpret UW, State, Federal and other Granting Authority regulations.
--Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple complex projects, and strong attention to detail.
Ability to analyze accounting data and advise others on the appropriate action to be taken as a result of the analysis.
-Knowledge of and ability to produce a wide variety of clear and accurate financial reports.
-Ability to apply established accounting principles and interpret a wide range of agency, state, federal and donor rules, regulations and expense allowances in the maintenance, reconciliation and analysis of accounts.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
-Previous experience in an academic medical center or healthcare setting is highly desirable.
-Experience with automated accounting systems (e.g. WISER and SFS Accounting Data Warehouse).
-Knowledge of UW operating policies and procedures.
