The Department of Theatre Arts at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant Professor specializing in Theatre Education and Arts Integration. The successful candidate will teach a course in arts integration as well as courses selected from the following areas: methods and materials for teaching drama in the secondary classroom, creative drama, puppetry through service-learning, and/or directing for young audiences. Additional responsibilities may include: teaching online courses, advising students about careers in theatre education, supervising secondary student teachers, and/or directing for the Theatre for Young Audiences program. The candidate will also be expected to perform service-related activities, engage in creative and/or scholarly activities, and teach other undergraduate courses as assigned. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

  • An earned MFA or earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Theatre Education or other closely-related disciplines from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required.


  • Required Experience:

  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level;
  • Ability to teach arts integration and one or more of the following areas: creative drama, puppetry through service-learning, directing for young audiences;
  • Demonstrated experience in directing, devising, playwriting or other areas of theatre production.


  • Preferred Experience :

  • Previous experience or demonstrated commitment to working with diverse communities.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language such as (Spanish, Hmong, Hindi) is preferred but not required.
  • Ability and interest in teaching online courses, and;
  • A teaching credential or experience working in K-12 classroom
  • settings, and;
  • Ability and interest in the development of a methods and materials course for teaching drama in the secondary classroom, and;
  • Demonstrated ability in community outreach.

    The Theatre Arts faculty includes performers, designers, and directors with top academic credentials as well as professional experience. The Department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Central to our Department's success is a commitment to a hands-on education for our diverse student population.

    Our Theatre Arts majors are provided a liberal arts core and academic theatre coursework balanced with significant opportunities to play leading roles, to direct, and to design for lab and main stage productions. Organizations such as the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival and the American College Dance Festival have honored numerous Fresno State students. Working together, students and faculty have created many shows that have won regional, national, and international honors. The Department offers a BA in Theatre Arts with concentrations in Acting, Design/Tech, General Theatre and Dance.
