Dean, School of Global Public Health

New York University

New York, NY, USA

New York University’s School of Global Public Health (GPH) seeks as its next Dean a strategic leader who will elevate the School’s impact, visibility, and reputation by building on its remarkable early successes. NYU established GPH in 2015 with the intention of fostering interdisciplinary and cross-continental activities that address the world’s most pressing public health challenges. Having established an excellent faculty and attracted accomplished students to its strong program offerings, the School is poised to undertake, in its next phase of development, an ambitious and distinctive strategy that will solidify its standing as a leading institution in the field.

The global public health landscape is shifting rapidly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the persistent impact of racism and colonialism, and the negative health effects of climate change. Global health priorities and funding strategies are shifting rapidly to respond to this volatile new landscape. Institutions in public health, including GPH, are at the forefront of this response; public health program enrollments are surging, and students are calling for innovative approaches to education that are inclusive and embedded in community impact. This Deanship is an exceptional opportunity to set the direction for this young and dynamic school that will have a tremendous impact on the future of global public health practice, research, and education. GPH benefits from NYU’s size, reach, and research strength and its location within one of the world’s most vibrant and data-rich cities. Additionally, NYU’s unparalleled global network across six continents provides GPH with a natural platform to address public health challenges around the world. The School’s next Dean will bring a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, health equity, diversity, and action on a global scale.

The school has grown considerably in depth and breadth over the past six years. In its short history, GPH has become home to a full-time faculty of 55, 37 associated or affiliated faculty, 10 visiting faculty/fellows, 45 research scientists; about 45 full-time administrative staff; and approximately 1,400 students, comprised of nearly 1,000 graduate students enrolled in the MPH, MS, MA, PhD, and DrPH degree programs and roughly 400 undergraduate co-majors and co-minors. The School is organized into six academic departments, programs, and centers and has seen its enrollment double over the past two years, driven in part by the current public health crisis and the inequities it has further exposed.

The School of Global Public Health seeks a scholar of distinction who will build on NYU’s expansive reach as a globally networked university and cultivate groundbreaking research, practice, and education that advances equitable health for all. The Dean will lead a dynamic school that equips students for the public health workforce through appropriate, practice-oriented, and academically rigorous curricula. The Dean will work with the community to advance a distinctive research agenda with relevance to global challenges, while also embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout instruction, research, and service.  The Dean will be a respected institutional leader and manager of faculty and staff and a seasoned financial manager and fundraiser. As an active, senior member of the University’s leadership team, the Dean will work closely with faculty, staff, and NYU leaders to generate buy-in, achieve consensus around clearly articulated priorities, nurture a shared culture, and facilitate collaborative relationships within and beyond NYU.
