TITLE: Assistant Professor (Tenure-earning or Clinical Assistant) in Elementary Education

ABOUT THE POSITION:   The University of Alabama in Huntsville College of Education is seeking a tenure-track OR clinical-track Assistant Professor of Elementary Education. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual committed to promoting just, equitable, and inclusive education to teach in the elementary education (literacy methods) and elementary education foundational courses (assessment, instructional strategies, classroom management). The successful candidate will be expected to maintain scholarly activities, teach courses in elementary education (with a focus on reading/emergent literacy) and engage in school, college, university and national service.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

   

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, specifically in elementary education, that include a focus on emergent literacy, learner-centered inquiry and project-based learning for elementary teacher education candidates, as well as other foundational courses for both the undergraduate and graduate programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction;
  • Supervise and mentor students during practicum courses and internships;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to conduct program/course planning and revision;
  • Engage in scholarly endeavors, including presentations, refereed publications and writing proposals for extramural research funding;
  • Provide academic advisement and mentoring;
  • Provide service to the University, College, Community and Profession.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in elementary education or curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in elementary education or closely related area from an accredited institution. ABD may be considered, but doctorate must be completed by the start of the 2022 academic year;
  • 3 or more years of successful K-5 teaching experience as a licensed elementary teacher.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience in education profession including involvement with K-12 partnerships and collaborations and community outreach, and literacy initiatives
  • Three or more years of successful K–3 teaching experience as a licensed classroom teacher
  • Three or more years of successful experience as a reading specialist and/or literacy coach in the elementary grades
  • In-depth understanding of current state and national educator preparation issues and research;
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and facilitating online and blended/hybrid course delivery
  • Understanding of curriculum standards, planning, and implementation at the elementary (K-6) levels
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse school-aged students;
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly and creative activity;
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development to remain current in the field;
  • Experience using current technology to support elementary teaching and learning.

Rank and Salary:  This is a tenure-track OR clinical-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Salary will be competitive and commensurate to rank, experience, and qualifications.  An excellent comprehensive benefits package is available.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:  The College of Education is comprised of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Kinesiology.  The College offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in teacher education and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with concentrations in exercise science, physical education, and sport and fitness management.  The Educator Preparation Program serves undergraduate and graduate candidates in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Collaborative Education (special education), Early Childhood Education/Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, English Language Arts, General Science, General Social Sciences, History, Mathematics, Music Education, Orientation and Mobility, Physical Education, Physics, Visual Arts, Visual Impairments, and World Languages.  The College also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (5th year Alternative Master’s initial license), a Master of Education degree with concentrations in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Reading Specialist, Visual Impairments, and Orientation and Mobility, and a Master of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. It anticipates launching a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology in Fall 2022.
