The counselor works with a diverse student population with concerns
related to addictions, personal, and career development. The
following represent some of the processes in completing the
counseling duties: establish and maintain effective working
relationships with students, other staff members, campus community,
and general public; exercise, good judgment in appraising
situations and making recommendations and clinical decisions;
maintain daily records of all students receiving on-going
counseling; make appropriate referrals to other agencies; make
appropriate and effective use of counseling interventions,
resources, and instruments.
The counselor administers and interprets individual test results; conducts seminars for outreach counseling; completes the logistics necessary for an effective session. The incumbent is responsible for counseling students in the area of personal adjustment, academic and career counseling; conducting counseling sessions, networking with other counselors or student service personnel. The counselor participates in planning and creating programming activities and research; supervises graduate mental health interns and practicum students; assists students in gaining self-understanding and self-acceptance through individual and group counseling; prepares case files on all clients; works closely with other professional staff members who may be involved in planning and developing student service programs; applies good judgment in appraising situations and making recommendations and decisions; practices sound counseling methods; applies excellent communication and interpersonal skills while interacting with students, professional counselors, and administrators; participates in special projects and serve on committee as directed by administrator.
