Junior Associate General Counsel

Position Summary:
Provide legal guidance, training, and representation to the various University clients. Perform legal and factual research pertaining to various issues, and draft memoranda regarding same. Respond to requests for access to University records. Review and revise University policies and procedures.
This is an entry-level, fixed term position, and is designed to train recent law school graduates, attorneys wanting to change career focus, or attorneys coming off a judicial clerkship, in the intricacies of higher education law. The successful candidate can expect to work in numerous areas of law, including employment law, public records act requests, student affairs, FERPA, Title IX, Title VI, ADA, FHA, etc., all within the context of University operations. This is a one-year appointment, with renewal for an additional one-year term at the General Counsel's option. Current third year law students (both December 2021 and May 2022 graduates) are encouraged to apply. The start date will depend on the availability of the successful candidate, but will be no later than August 2022. The person hired who is not already licensed to practice law in the State of Idaho or another state is expected to sit for the bar exam at the earliest available date, but in no event, no later than July 2022, and must become licensed no later than the April 2023. Failure to become licensed by April 2023 will result in the position terminating at the end of June 2023. For current third year law students graduating in May 2022, there is the possibility to start a paid internship during the Spring 2022 semester. For December 2021 graduates, or those who have already graduated from law school, the start date will be earlier.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school to be received no later than May 2022. Licensed to practice law in the State of Idaho, or admitted to the Idaho Bar no later than April 2023.
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Idaho College of Law;
(2) Licensed to practice law in the State of Idaho; and
(3) Legal clerkship/internship/externship/practicum at an institution of higher education, or completion of a class on the Law of Higher Education.
