Faculty Positions In Artificial Intelligence, Computational and Data Sciences

The College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) and the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at The Pennsylvania State University, as part of a major multi-year faculty hiring initiative in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Sciences (DS), invites applications for open-rank tenure-line faculty positions in AI beginning in Fall 2022. IST will serve as the tenure home.

We seek outstanding candidates with a strong track record of research and publications on AI/DS methodologies for accelerating science or scientific discovery in one or more scientific disciplines, e.g., biomedical and health sciences, life sciences, material sciences, behavioral, cognitive and brain sciences, among others. While we welcome applications from individuals with expertise in Scientific AI, we are especially interested in candidates with a strong track record of contributions in:
  • Novel methodologies in literature-based scientific discovery e.g., extraction, annotation, integration, and validation of scientific claims, hypotheses, and supporting and opposing evidence from the literature
  • Scientific knowledge representation, e.g., frameworks for encoding, communicating, and reasoning with models or abstractions of scientific domains, and scientific artifacts (data, experiments, hypotheses, models, scientific arguments, etc.)
  • Experiment planning, optimization, documentation, and replication
  • Machine learning and causal inference from observational or experimental data, especially methods that integrate information from multiple modalities and scales, incorporate prior knowledge or constraints (e.g., physics), or explain the learned models and their predictions
  • Human-AI communication, interaction, and collaboration in scientific discovery

Candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses including residential, online, or hybrid courses. Successful candidates for the Assistant Professor position will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Data Sciences, Informatics, Computer Science, Statistics) prior to beginning employment at The Pennsylvania State University and should demonstrate strong research potential and commitment to interdisciplinary research and education at the interface of AI, DS, and one or more scientific discipline. Candidates seeking the rank of Associate Professor position will have the same qualifications as the Assistant Professor and a strong track record of research, publications, and funding. Candidates for the Full Professor position the same qualifications as candidates for the Associate Professor and a track record of research, publications, and funding that distinguishes them, nationally or internationally, as leaders in AI, Informatics, or Data Sciences. All candidates must pass a background check before beginning employment.

The College of Information Sciences and Technology is strongly committed to a diverse community and to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for faculty, staff and students of all races, genders, and backgrounds. The college is committed to making good faith efforts to recruit, hire, retain, and promote qualified individuals from underrepresented minority groups including women, persons of color, diverse gender identities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. We invite applicants to address their engagement in or commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity issues as they relate to broadening participation in the disciplines represented in the college as well as aligning with the mission of the College of IST in a separate statement.

Applicants should include with their application: (1) a cover letter detailing qualifications for the position, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a 3-5 page research statement outlining future research plans, (4) a one-page teaching statement, and (5) a statement regarding engagement in or commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity issues as they relate to broadening participation in AI, Informatics, or Computational and Data Sciences. Applicants for the Assistant Professor position should arrange for at least three references to be sent via email to humanresources@ist.psu.edu. Applicants for the Associate or Full Professor position should provide contact information (name, affiliation, email address) for at least four references. Applicants for the Associate or Full Professor position will be notified before letters are solicited from their references. Review of applications will begin on November 1 and continue until the positions are filled. Inquiries about the position may be directed to facultyrecruiting@ist.psu.edu.

As part of the major multi-year faculty hiring initiative in AI and DS, the College of IST has an additional search for open-rank, tenure-track faculty hires in DS and AI. Candidates are welcome to apply to that search as well as this IST/ICDS co-hire position and express interest in both positions in the cover letter. The College of IST at Pennsylvania State University has a growing cadre of faculty with research expertise in informatics and data sciences (including artificial intelligence, machine learning, information integration, image analytics, text analytics, data privacy, and data ethics). IST offers a highly collaborative interdisciplinary research environment, strong research programs in data sciences, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, information security and privacy, and socio-technical systems, a strong Ph.D. program in informatics, and several highly successful undergraduate programs (including one in Data Sciences).

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), one of five university-wide interdisciplinary institutes, is home for advanced interdisciplinary computation and data-enabled collaborative science at Penn State. ICDS fosters both high-impact computational and data science methodologies as well as their applications to address a broad range of scientific and societal challenges, multifaceted models, and their societal impacts. ICDS supports a vibrant community of scholars, which includes more than 30 co-hired faculty and over 300 affiliated researchers with access to ICDS advanced research computing infrastructure and a cadre of technical experts, research scientists, and engineers.

As ICDS co-hires, the successful candidates will be expected to engage in computation and data-intensive research, including some of the development and/or application of innovative machine learning and computational methods, big data, complex simulations, and AI. Further information on the institute and its co-hires can be found at: http://icds.psu.edu.

Co-hires will contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications, a university-wide research center focused on AI for accelerating science. Co-hires will have a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative graduate and undergraduate education and training in Data Sciences, Informatics, AI and related areas. Co-hires will also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in other newly established AI centers such as the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Engineered Systems as well as other university institutes including the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, the Institute for Energy and Environment, the Social Science Research Institute, the Materials Research Institute, and the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.
