The California State University East Bay seeks applications for the full-time position of post-doctoral
researcher to support research on two National Science Foundation grants. This is a 1-year grant funded
position with option for re-appointment. It is full-time, benefited, and non-exempt. This position will be
split between two projects.
The majority of funding will come from the Science Communities of Practice Partnership (SCOPP), a
four-year $3.4 million National Science Foundation grant. The project is developing and studying a
comprehensive teacher professional development model to transform science teaching and learning in
elementary schools serving predominately minoritized students. The project will provide evidence about
specific components of the professional development model that support sustainable improvement in
science teaching, will test the ways that teacher ownership and organizational capacity mediate
instructional change, and will develop four tools for facilitating teacher learning and the accompanying
capacity building. This project is in the analysis and writing phase. Mentored by Dr. Kathryn N
Hayes at CSUEB and Dr. Christine Bae at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The second project is a 4-year $1.5 million NSF funded program called Climate Empowerment Learning
Initiative (CELI). This project explores the creation of a schoolwide, multidisciplinary climate justice
curriculum and approach for a high school and feeder middle school through Networked Improvement
Communities (NIC). The primary outcome sought is school-wide transformation, including teacher and
student identity as agents of change in the community. Critical transformative sustainability and
ecological theory provide the theoretical frameworks for this project, supporting instructional practices
that directly privilege students’ lived experience while also considering the climate crisis and its adverse
and disproportionate impacts. The project will draw on surveys, interviews, audio recordings, classroom
observations, and field notes to investigate whether and how co-creation through an NIC can lead to rapid
educational innovation that transforms whole school, teacher and student outcomes. This project is in
the design and data collection phase. Mentored by Dr. Kathryn N Hayes and Dr. Michele Korb at
CSUEB and by Dr. Emily Harris at BSCS.

Summary of position: The Post-doctoral Researcher will work in collaboration with the research teams to
design research, coordinate and conduct data collection, analyze data, prepare manuscripts for
publication, prepare reports, and supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Because the
majority of funding is from a project where most of the data has been collected, this is a unique
opportunity to join a project ready for analysis and writing in multiple areas. We seek a postdoc
who has experience writing for publication and is interested in publishing. In addition, CELI
provides an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of research design for an innovative project.
