Open Rank Clinical Professor in Counseling

The College of Education at the University of Iowa is making a major investment in faculty hires to create a group of faculty who will work together to address critical mental health issues in school-aged children. Faculty in several academic programs (e.g., special education, school counseling, clinical mental health counseling, school psychology, counseling psychology, and rehabilitation counseling) will join the recently established Iowa Center for School Mental Health and work with interdisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners to conduct and disseminate research and professional development aimed at the prevention and treatment of mental health problems in schools and communities. 

Position

The Department of Counselor Education at the University of Iowa invites applications for one open-rank clinical-track faculty position School Counseling (MA) and Counselor Education and Supervision (PhD) Programs. The academic year position will begin August 17, 2022. 

We seek an individual with interests and experience in the fields of school counseling and counselor education and supervision.  This individual should have demonstrated:

  1. Skills in effective teaching and clinical supervision
  2. Skills as effective instructor at the graduate level
  3. Commitment to professional service that advances the research, training, and clinical work intended to improve and support student mental health so that all school-age children, educators, and schools can be successful and resilient

This position requires an earned doctorate in Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision, or a related field. Selected candidates must hold the required professional certifications (e.g. National Certified Counselor, NCC) or be certification-eligible. School counselor or pupil personnel license (or license-eligibility) in the state of Iowa is required. Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or license eligibility is desired.

The successful candidate will join a clinical supervision and training partnership with School Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Iowa Center for School Mental Health to teach graduate-level courses. These programs have strong department, college, university, and clinical community support, and are committed to an environment that values diversity and collegiality.  The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to a scientist-practitioner philosophy and will be experienced in implementation of CACREP accreditation standards as they relate to counselor preparation.

Education Requirement

By August 2022, prospective candidates must have one of the following:

  • Earned doctorate in Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision, or a related field from a Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program
  • Earned doctorate in Counseling or closely related field, if not CACREP accredited, have had employment as a full-time faculty member in a CACREP accredited Counselor Education program for a minimum of one full academic year before January 1, 2013.

Required Qualifications

  1. Concentration or specialization in School Counseling
  2. Experience in teaching graduate courses
  3. Experience in providing clinical supervision reflective of CACREP standards and practices
  4. Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues and with schools, agencies, and community partners
  5. Demonstrated commitment to work with diverse populations
  6. Professional identity as a counselor
  7. Be a National Certified Counselor, NCC, or certification eligible
  8. Eligible for school counseling licensure in the State of Iowa

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience in the practice of school counseling
  2. Be LMHC, LPC or eligible for counselor licensure
  3. Experience teaching in a graduate level school counseling program
  4. Experience teaching and/or designing online instruction

Responsibilities

  1. Being a core faculty member in the School Counseling master’s program
  2. Serve as Clinical Coordinator for the School Counseling and Counselor Education and Supervision programs
  3. Develop relationships with local schools and community counseling agencies that will lead to clinical placements of graduate students
  4. Coordinate field placements and provide effective supervision of MA students in School Counseling and Ph.D. students in Counselor Education and Supervision
  5. Teaching courses in the School Counseling MA program and the Ph.D. Counselor Education & Supervision program, in areas consistent with the candidate’s interests and department needs
  6. Advising students at the master’s and doctoral levels including supervision as needed
  7. Engage in professional, university, collegiate, and/or departmental service that advances the research, training, and clinical work intended to improve the lives of school-age children, educators, and school environments
  8. Contribute to the professional development efforts and initiatives of the Iowa Center for School Mental Health
