The University of Virginia’s School of Nursing seeks a leading researcher for the Kluge-Schakat Professorship in Compassionate Care to facilitate research excellence in compassionate care. The study of compassionate care is to be interpreted broadly to embody a wide range of concepts such as alleviation of suffering, palliative care, work factors affecting the well-being of clinicians, characteristics such as empathy, gratitude and resilience and practices that help leaders promote a more compassionate environment. As a teacher and scholar, the successful candidate will shape and advance the integration of compassionate, contemplative care into clinical practice, education, research, and policy.

The Kluge-Schakat professor will be a leader in contributing to the School’s strategic priorities which include building the Areas of Excellence in research and our commitments to interdisciplinary collaboration as well as diversity, equity and inclusion.  The professor will take an active leadership role in mentoring faculty, strengthening research infrastructure, and advancing our research enterprise within the SON, and the larger UVA community.

The School of Nursing is known for its highly developed Compassionate Care Initiative (CCI), built over a decade, to cultivate a resilient and compassionate healthcare workforce. The Kluge-Schakat Professor will benefit by being associated with the CCI which sponsors programming aimed at growing resilient clinicians, teams and organizations that contribute to compassionate care and lead positive change in healthcare. The initiative promotes personal, leadership, team and organizational practices through reflective, experiential and interprofessional education, as well as scholarship aimed at creating safe, healthy and high-functioning work environments where all staff embody compassion in their work.

The UVA School of Nursing has been actively engaged in IDEA, our Inclusion, Diversity and Excellence Achievement initiative. We are deeply committed to developing a community that is inclusive, respectful, and considers diversity to be a key part of our excellence. We seek applicants whose experience, teaching, research, and/or community service has prepared them to substantially contribute to this mission. We welcome, in particular, applicants from groups who have been historically underrepresented in nursing, including racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+, veterans, people with disabilities, and men.

Candidates must possess a terminal degree in Nursing or other related field, have an active program of successful scholarship aligned with the objectives of the Kluge-Schakat Professorship and a history of consistent, substantial external funding. Candidates must qualify for associate or full professor rank for a tenure-track position.  For nurse candidates, eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia is required. Joint appointments across UVA may be possible.

The selected applicant will be required to complete a background check and health screen prior to their first day of employment per university policy.
