Manager of Career Launch Chicago Apprenticeship (Trades)

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

Career Launch Chicago is a new public-private partnership that aims to build a robust youth apprenticeship system that connects education and workforce training, launching students into high-demand careers. Career Launch seeks to align education and training between Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), while building on work-based learning systems and relationships that result in youth apprenticeship opportunities for dual-enrolled students. Through Career Launch, CPS and CCC will put in place the tools, processes and technology to support the successful onboarding, implementation, graduation, and employment for students and employers.

Via the Bluhm Family Foundation and Chicago Roadmap, Career Launch Chicago supports the creation of a Construction Technology pathway for CPS and CCC students. The new construction pathway will provide students with meaningful paid work experience to begin building their professional portfolios and offer a new degree program that exposes them to several construction trades.

Reporting to the Director-Career Launch Chicago, theManager-Career Launch Chicago Apprenticeship (Trades) , utilizing expertise in the construction industry, manages and oversees the implementation of a Construction Technology Pathway program, working in close collaboration with ChicagoBuilds, a citywide, two-year off-campus construction training program. The position develops materials, processes, and systems to support the implementation of a pilot model and the pathway program.

The Manager-Career Launch Chicago Apprenticeship (Trades), manages and provide support services to students enrolled in the 2+2 construction technology pathway, monitoring their progress and work-based learning experiences to support their successful completion. The position functions as a critical intermediary between the ChicagoBuilds team, CCC, students, and other stakeholders including employer partners. Performs related duties as required.

Position required to travel on a regular basis to CPS high schools and CCC campuses. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends as required.

Note: Position is funded by a grant from the Bluhm Family Foundation through June 30, 2023 unless renewed by the Bluhm Family Foundation or other means.

Your Responsibilities
  • Supports the development and execution of a plan to manage program alignment for the Construction Pathway and Career Launch Chicago.
  • Collects and evaluates data related to the Construction Pathway to inform Career Launch Chicago recruitment strategy, including students enrolled in pathways, success data and persistence in pathways through completion. Adjusts as needed based on data.
  • Leads effort to engage and support students in work-based learning by providing student coaching, coordinating professional development sessions for students, and working in collaboration with CLC Director and ChicagoBuilds to design tools and processes to successfully implement the program.
  • Supports the development of pipeline of students prepared for work-based learning opportunities.
  • Works as CCC partner with CPS/ChicagoBuilds to onboard students onto the Construction Pathway. Works collaboratively with school leadership to solve problems related to program implementation.
  • Coordinates communication to Chicago Roadmap team regarding new and updated program developments and ensures widespread knowledge of alignment opportunities between organizations.
  • Facilitates collaborative relationships between various CCC departments and CPS partners, engaging stakeholders at all levels of both organizations as well as employer, nonprofit, philanthropic, and other work-based learning partners.
  • Supports youth apprenticeships for other trades-based fields as necessary.
  • Works closely with Director of Career Launch Chicago and Manager of CTE Pathways to offer strategic insight into process implementation and progress towards goals.
Your Qualifications
  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years of work experience in program management, construction management or other trades, or combination thereof.
  • Experience in and knowledge of the construction industry
  • Experience in youth development with the ability and desire to motivate youth highly desirable
  • Experience having direct accountability for the achievements/outcomes of a group of individuals
  • Experience keeping case notes, highly desirable
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and the ability to give and receive candid feedback
  • Strong understanding of the construction landscape and CPS landscape highly desirable
  • Proven success working in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple workstreams
  • Knowledge of best practices in college and career exploration
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and the work place.
  • Ability to operate efficiently with ambiguity through development of pathway program
  • A valid State of Illinois driver’s license
  • Must be able to travel frequently to CPS high schools and CCC campuses
  • Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekends
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
