The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is seeking an Assistant Dean or Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations reporting directly to the Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. This position requires some evening and weekend work. The ADean serves at the discretion of the Dean.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide internal and external leadership for the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Conceptualize, design, and implement a strategic plan for building a development program and an alumni relations program that are sophisticated and multifaceted; identify/establish and apply appropriate metrics to evaluate all aspects of the programs’ success and provide routine periodic updates to the Dean.
  • Develop productive relationships with the Dean, other members of the senior leadership group, faculty, and key external partners to leverage their strategic participation in the fundraising process as well as in alumni affairs.
  • Supervise and mentor a staff of four to form a highly functioning team whose productivity is measured in concrete, tangible outcomes established in consultation with the Dean. Manage this group so that it meets fundraising and alumni affairs goals and establishes a culture of performance and responsiveness to both external and internal constituents.
  • Assist Dean in maximizing the effectiveness of the School’s Board of Visitors and in planning and executing all Board of Visitors meetings. Support the nominating process, which provides guidelines for Board membership and articulates the roles and responsibilities of Board members. Identify and recommend potential new Board members to the Dean and the University of Maryland, Baltimore President.

Development & Alumni Relations

  • Evaluate all activities designed to raise external funding in light of the School of Nursing’s Strategic Plan and other priorities. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward individual gift prospects from among more than 23,000 alumni and friends.
  • Build, manage, and mentor a team capable of building effective programs in major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, and in-kind gifts.
  • Implement strategies for securing corporate and foundation gifts, including soliciting support for the School’s signature events and priorities for funding.
  • Work with the Director of Alumni Relations to create new opportunities to engage   alumni, including implementation and oversight of social networking opportunities and the alumni networking site for the School.

Management and Operations

  • Empower development and alumni relations staff through active and inclusive communication and delegation and ensure staff accountability for excellence and outcomes through clearly defined, collaboratively established, and measurable goals. Provide leadership and direction to staff and personally model best practices.
  • Oversee the department’s budget, development information systems, personnel, and other administrative issues.
  • Serve as liaison to and maintain partnership with the University of Maryland Foundation and the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation, as well as UMB’s Office of External Affairs. Participate with peers as an active member of the UMB Campus Fundraising Council and other University fundraising committees or strategic planning sessions as requested by the Dean.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Position rank will be determined based on education and experience, as well as consideration for the selected candidate's track record with major gifts.

  Qualifications   

Assistant Dean Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Ten (10) or more years of broad-based related experience spent progressively building a background in the various individual giving functions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience in a complex university setting. Direct experience with capital campaigns. Demonstrated experience with corporate and foundation fundraising. Track record in the cultivation, solicitation, and closing of major gifts ($50,000+).

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of supervisory or managerial experience in development/fundraising in higher education or other non-profit organization. 

Associate Dean Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Twelve (12) or more years of broad-based related experience spent progressively building a background in the various individual giving functions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience in a complex university setting. Direct experience with capital campaigns. Demonstrated experience with corporate and foundation fundraising. Track record in the cultivation, solicitation, and closing of major gifts ($100,000+).

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of supervisory or managerial experience in development/fundraising in higher education or other non-profit organization. 

OTHER: Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Committee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of best practices in the development field in general and in the areas of individual giving (annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving). Demonstrated ability to take initiative for projects and programs. 

Leadership, coaching, and team-building skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Highly skilled in dealing with people: diplomacy, tact, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated strong oral/written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Strong managerial, organizational, and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions. Demonstrated track record of meeting deadlines. 

Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team player with a senior administrative team and with the development and alumni relations staff. Ability to think creatively and collaboratively with the chief development offices at UMB, in an effort to identify, launch, and fund interprofessional programs. Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals at the School level. Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information. Ability and willingness to travel.
