Job Summary:
This position is responsible for independently performing technical responsibilities in support of the School of Veterinary Medicine's Histology and Necropsy services. The position requires the ability to work within a team setting; both with co-workers and with the various clients who submit specimens for processing.
60%: Responsible for receiving specimens and carefully check paperwork for accuracy and completeness. Assists or initiates specimen preparation. Assists pathologists with the grossing and trimming procedures for necropsy and biopsy specimens, trims in cases for histologic evaluation, and assists with processing of other diagnostic samples for laboratory testing. Maintains communication and is available to retrieve needed materials.
10%: Responsible for maintaining equipment and adequate inventory of supplies and cleanliness of facility. Maintains and cleans equipment associated with Necropsy and Biopsy areas. Maintains stock of supplies associated with Necropsy and Biopsy areas. Notifies supervisor of needed maintenance or repairs; initiates and follows through with requests and work orders. Other duties as assigned
30% Prepares and processes tissues to produce quality histologic slides employing a variety of histotechniques in a high volume central histopathology laboratory. Tissue processes may require specialized handling techniques (i.e. eyes, bone, etc.). Performs both routine, special staining procedures, and Immunohistochemistry, and must evaluate and solve problems related to techniques. Responsible for performing complex laboratory procedures, evaluates the quality of results, and analyzes deviations in quality using accepted laboratory principles. Requires an understanding of the scientific basis of laboratory methods and ability to evaluate new methods for cost, space and equipment requirements. Revises and updates staining techniques based on acquisition of new knowledge.
Position responsibilities require the educational background and experience to perform standard and recently developed histotechnology laboratory procedures and methods requiring extensive independent judgement and responsibility with minimum supervision. Position responsibilities also require the ability to assist in the training of histology employees as directed by the Histology Supervisor.
The position works under the supervision of the Histology and Necropsy supervisors.

2. Knowledge of basic animal dissection
3. Knowledge of necropsy equipment and supplies
4. Ability to effectively communicate, interact with staff Pathologists and Residents
5. Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and hygienic cleaning techniques.
6. Good manual dexterity allowing safe handling of a number of tools, including cutting tools.
7. Ability to lift 50-pound objects to a height of 4 feet, and to bend, stoop and twist on a regular basis.
8. Knowledge of the principles of paraffin embedding, tissue sectioning with rotary microtome.
9. Knowledge of hematoxylin and eosin staining principles
10. Knowledge of histochemical special staining techniques
11. Knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques
12. Knowledge of tissue processing requirements and techniques
13. Knowledge of chemical solution preparation and laboratory quality control
14. Knowledge of basic laboratory Q.C. data collection and analysis
15. Ability to problem solve, work independently, and prioritize tasks according to the needs of the department.
