Job Summary/Basic Function

The department of biology is seeking applications for a Scanning Electron Microscope Technician. The person selected will operate and maintain the University’s scanning electron microscopy facility for use by faculty, staff, and students at Millersville University and by visiting scientists, school groups, and other outside groups. This includes research and course-related activities along with grant-funded and external contract work. Additionally, to assist the Department of Biology Technician with maintenance of biology labs, its equipment, and other related activities.

Salary: $21.87 per hour plus benefits, some starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Medical, Dental/Vision – Available at part-time rates
  • Group Life Insurance - Equal to annual salary (up to $50,000) at no cost to the employee.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in STEM -related discipline.
  • Experience with electron microscopy.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment.
    • maintain a clean, organized, safe laboratory environment.
  • Evidence of strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of sample preparation for electron microscopy.
  • Proficiency in computer skills specific to operating an electron microscope and conducting an analysis of the results.
  • Experience with digital image processing.
  • Experience and knowledge of handling chemicals and gases, including their safe disposal.
  • Ability to:
    • work with persons of diverse cultures, racial and ethnic groups.
    • prioritize duties and follow detailed procedures.
    • problem-solve and be detail-oriented.
    • work independently and in cooperation with others.
    • plan and organize routine maintenance of equipment, internally and with external vendors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in:
    • operating and maintaining a scanning electron microscope.
    • operating and maintaining vacuum equipment.
    • electron beam micro-analysis.
    • computer and web site maintenance.
  • Experience with sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy.
  • Two years of progressively complex maintenance experience of electronic equipment and electrical devices.
  • Valid driver’s license.
