The Assistant Dean will report directly to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) and Dean for the Center for Academic Success (CAS). The Assistant Dean will serve as the number two supervisor in the Center for Academic Success and will be in charge of the department in the AVP's absence. The Assistant Dean will assist the AVP in the supervision of and leadership of the Center for Academic Success (including the Transfer Student Center, Pre-Majors, GEN 1 program, FFWD, etc.).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The role of the Assistant Dean includes the responsibility to serve as the primary supervisor for all Center of Academic Success Student Success Advisors; scheduling Fall and Spring University Life courses; assigning University of Life courses to Student Success Advisors and Graduate Assistants; monitoring work schedules & vacation/sick leave of Student Success Advisors and Graduate Assistants; facilitating staff meetings. Serve and facilitate all incoming first-year students (i.e. course registration) as well as secondary advising support to students until graduation. Help coordinate and facilitate summer advising for incoming freshman and transfer students.
  • Provide institutional reports (i.e. board updates) and annual report to the AVP & Dean for the Center of Academic Success.
  • In conjunction with the AVP & Dean for the CAS hire all CAS Student Success Advisors including interviewing, hiring, and training. Directly supervise all CAS Student Success Advisors - daily support, course scheduling & assignments, continued training, facilitate staff meetings, provide annual performance reviews, and oversee vacation and sick leave.
  • Must interview, hire, train and supervise Graduate Assistants (GA's) and follow all hiring and supervisory procedures as set forth by the Provost's Office, the Division and HR. Complete all paperwork as required by the Provost's Office, the Division and HR. Observe all Graduate Assistants' teaching in June and fall semester and review in person.
  • The role of Assistant Dean includes the responsibility to also serve as a mentor and provide primary academic advisement to students with fewer than 30 credits throughout the academic year (specifically students who remain under 30 credit who were attached to Graduate Assistants who left).
  • This position will instruct between 3-4 sections of University Life in the fall and one in the spring, monitor all students' academic progress; complete COMPASS reports, manage early alerts, etc.
  • To be the lead curriculum designer for University Life and all SKIL-1104 (Study Strategies) courses. To invite and schedule "guest instructors" as needed. To oversee syllabus design, all topics and lessons, academic calendar, and course evaluations. To observe all SKIL instructors and review observations with them.
  • Participate on the EAB/COMPASS/Degree Works leadership team regarding all "Early Alerts," Advising Summaries and Appointment Summaries that are generated in Center for Academic Success. Keep department informed of all changes to COGNOS, COMPASS, Degree Works, Banner INB, Blackboard, and Banner Self Service.
  • To represent the Center for Academic Success on university wide committees and Strategic Planning committees (including but not limited to: Provost's Academic Advising Committee, the Division of Student Services Assessment Committee, Pirate Adventure Planning Committee, Shared Goal Transfer Student Advising Committee, etc.).

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree and 5-8 years in higher education administration
