Research Engineer II, Computer Vision

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Kostas Research Institute (KRI), on Northeastern University's Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM), focuses on research and applications to national security challenges. Our diverse geospatial AI initiatives and prototype development have a current focus on force readiness and force protection to drive geospatial data to decisions and action. We work in cross-functional teams, exploring how geospatial data, data science, AI/deep learning, computer vision, and customer needs can create new products and insights. Diverse problems require a diverse group of minds. We are seeking a talented, motivated Computer Vision Scientist /Engineer to join our growing team and collaborate with other engineers, coops, PhDs, and Professors as well as work independently. As a member of our technical staff, you'll be working in our private cloud and/or Azure to ingest a wide variety of data, run advanced machine learning algorithms, and apply data science principles to understand the digital world by building computer-vision-backed APIs on top of data.

For superior candidates, we may consider options for remote work. Proximity to our satellite campus locations is preferred (Burlington MA, Seattle WA, and Arlington, VA).

  • Develop, adapt, and extend KRI's CV and ML/AI technology
  • Develop new CV and ML models for 2- and 3-D satellite, CubeSat, aerial and ground data sources
  • Optimize neural networks and associated preprocessing code to run efficiently on large amounts of geospatial data
  • Improve existing CV models for higher precision and recall metrics, with keen interest in statistical behavior of data and algorithms
  • Comprehend and contribute to all aspects of ML from data ingestion, storage, indexing, transformations, training, inference etc.
  • Deploy models in our high-performance computing environment through collaboration with extended team.
  • Iterate algorithms to continuously improve performance under a variety of conditions
  • Participate in small and tactical development teams using agile development principles, sprint planning, and standups etc.
  • Participate in customer meetings to present and discuss technical plans and milestones

  • MS (or Bsc) degree, or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (physics, mathematics, computer science, operations research, etc.)
  • 1-5 years research experience
  • Ability to communicate complex data science concepts and results in an understandable manner
  • Demonstrable examples working with image data and noisy datasets that may have sparsity in some dimension (e.g., spatially, temporally)
  • Excellent coding skills (especially python with a solid familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, pandas)
  • Experience with git, GitHub, Docker, and Unix/Linux
  • Example(s) of designed and trained CV models
  • Dedication to continuous integration and testing
  • Experience with LiDAR a plus
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills
