Position Description
Manages and directs the day to day operations of a research center/institute or medium sized department. Plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of the center/institute/department. Develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Develop annual and initiative-specific communication plans, from strategy through implementation and reporting, to advance Texas Tech University’s internal and external priorities. Working in close partnership with the Senior Director of Media and Public Affairs, the Senior Director of Communications will play an integral role in the development and implementation of communication strategies that enhance the Texas Tech University brand and engage our internal and external audiences with the mission of the institution.
  • Develop and implement external communication strategies and implementations to share information and engage alumni, community members, and other important constituencies in the mission and priorities of Texas Tech University. Close collaboration with marketing and media and public affairs teams to align resources and messaging with university goals and priorities.
  • Develop and implement internal communication strategies and implementations to share information and engage faculty and staff in the mission and priorities of Texas Tech University. Develop internal communication plans and messaging on behalf of senior leadership to ensure alignment with developed strategies.
  • Contribute to a university-wide content strategy that supports student recruitment, alumni engagement, and community outreach. These efforts will include close collaboration with communications and marketing staff in schools, colleges, and other campus units.
  • Direct the implementation of the university magazine, coordinating story ideas, visual elements, and art with a staff of writers, designers, and photographers.
  • Direct the editorial staff and related story content to continuously explore opportunities for expanding story reach locally, regionally, and nationally. Continue to improve upon the quality of storytelling to further extend the brand of the institution.
  • Fulfill a primary role in the execution of the crisis communication plan, including managing university messaging from the Emergency Operations Center during a campus emergency.
  • Cultivate, build, and maintain relationships with community leaders and alumni on behalf of the institution.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred; Six years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education beyond Bachelor's may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, mass communications or related field. Ten years of progressively responsible managerial experience and budgetary oversight.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
  • Ability to work with local, state, and national media.
  • Experience in media relations and successful media placement.
  • Ability to communicate in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Web and social media experience.
  • Oversee and plan news conferences.
