Division Head for Science and Engineering

Penn State Abington is searching for a Division Head for Science and Engineering to begin July 1, 2022. The Division Head oversees approximately 55 full-time faculty members, Bachelor's degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity Analytics/Operations, Engineering, Information Science and Technology, and Science, and coursework in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The Division Head is the academic leader in the division and creates a positive and equitable environment for teaching, learning, student success, scholarship, creative activity, service, and community engagement. The Division Head holds the authority and responsibility for all administrative functions and supervision within the respective academic unit. The Division Head is the primary spokesperson for the Division and represents the interests of the faculty, and College both within and outside the University.

The Division Head reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer and supervises the divisional Program Chairs and is part of the Chancellor's Campus Leadership Council.

Responsibilities include:
  • Leadership and management of the division
  • Budget management and strategic thinking around resource allocation
  • Curriculum development
  • Strategic direction of the division with emphasis on increasing diversity, equity, and inclusive practices
  • Academic program evaluation and improvement
  • Advancing and contributing to the division's diverse portfolio of research, teaching, and service
  • Faculty Recruitment (in collaboration with Program Chairs and Associate Dean)
  • Faculty mentoring for excellence in the teaching, research, and service activities of the Division
  • Faculty evaluation in the tenure and promotion process
  • Staff supervision and development
  • Enrollment management and student recruitment support
  • Strategic planning and data analysis to support college outcomes and institutional effectiveness
  • Scheduling
  • Collaboration and coordination across units on campus to support the strategic goals of Penn State Abington and to accomplish the mission, vision, and values of the College
  • Institutional advancement
  • Community partnerships to enhance student and faculty success
  • Participation in college and university administrative committees and Faculty Senate committees


The Division Head provides energetic, emotionally intelligent, passionate and transparent leadership that is student-centered, forward thinking, entrepreneurial and focused on expanding the impact of the division and college through a demonstrated commitment to shared governance, inclusive excellence, equity and diversity; excellent communication skills; problem-solving capabilities; knowledge and support of best practices and student success strategies; the ability to advance research and scholarly contributions of the faculty; and collaborative decision-making that incorporates close listening and the ability to make informed decisions.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have a terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented in the division or a related discipline and credentials commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor. Candidates may currently hold the rank of Associate Professor if the candidate has significant administrative and scholarly achievement. The candidate's portfolio should contain evidence of dedication to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and antiracism through their teaching, mentoring, research, practice, and service. They must have: a recognized record of scholarship, education, and leadership within their discipline; demonstrated excellence in mentorship, leadership, and management; and experience in teaching and/or mentoring in a diverse academic environment.

Employment with the University will require the successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.

This is a 48-week administrative appointment. Prior experience as a department head, dean, or other academic administrative officer is highly preferred. Candidates should submit a letter of interest, CV, statement of administrative philosophy, and the names and contact information of three to five references. Review of applications will begin in November 2021. The search will continue until a suitable candidate is hired.
