The Assistant Director for Translational Research, JHAC ICTR, provides vision, strategic direction and oversight of translational research programs and cores/shared resources associated with the JHAC ICTR. In collaboration with the Director, JHAC ICTR, this individual leads the vision for biorepository science and services as well as for multi-omics sciences and services (including but not limited to proteomics), with a focus on assuring quality and timeliness of centralized biorepository and omics consultation for grant submissions and grant-funded studies led by Hopkins investigators who, in most cases, are based on the JHAC campus. This individual will also play a lead role in refining and executing the vision for optimal utilization of banked biospecimens at JHACH for the benefit of Hopkins researchers, their collaborators, and the field of pediatric translational research at large.

The Assistant Director for Translational Research, JHAC ICTR, serves as a role model for the principles of research ethics and integrity and embodies leadership qualities of inclusiveness, humility, strategic thinking, data-driven decision making, effective communication, drive for continuous improvement, pursuit of excellence, service to meet the key needs of constituents and stakeholders, and passion to foster the professional/career development of others. S/he is a nationally or internationally-recognized scientific leader in pediatric translational research, multi-omics, and/or biobanking, who will be employed by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a full time faculty member.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology
  • Nationally/Internationally-recognized research expertise in pediatric translational research field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive research leadership experience in an academic health system setting
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in pediatric translational research involving biomarkers and/or omics
  • Track record of peer-reviewed funding support and peer-reviewed publication productivity in pediatric translational research involving biomarkers and/or omics
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in biospecimen banking
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a co-investigator in clinical research
  • Strong command of regulatory aspects of translational research
  • Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, fiscal responsibility, fundraising, and business development at lab/research core or center level, as well as in building and maintaining positive relationships with community stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively delegate and adequately oversee professional staff in director and manager positions
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills, as well as a deft ability to elicit differing (and sometimes conflicting and constructively disruptive) opinions, perspectives, and ideas
  • Mature and sound judgement
  • Keen ability to think both creatively and analytically
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in leading and motivating scientific and operational staff in the pursuit of excellence, engagement in organizational mission, and achievement of both organizational and individual goals and metrics
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Executive leadership experience or executive leadership training is preferred (e.g., Certificate or Exec MBA)
Institutional Review Board/Research Ethics Board member experience is preferred

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
