The MA in NGO Management is the first of its kind to be international in scope, but domestic in practice. Students acquire the leadership and organizational skills needed to succeed in the nonprofit sector, both domestically and abroad. Courses focus on leadership, fundraising, grant writing, strategic planning, project management, monitoring and evaluation, communications, and resource development. Students complete their studies with a capstone project that focuses on a real-world issue which is relevant to present or future employers. This course is one of the core course requirements of the degree, and the first recommended course for all MA and Certificate students.

We invite applications to fill an adjunct teaching position (10-15 hours/week), non-tenure track, semester-by-semester hire, for the Spring 2022 semester (possibility of contract renewal by semester) to teach for the nonprofit management program. The degree and certificate programs are fully online asynchronous classes). The adjunct professor will report to the Program Director of the NGO and Nonprofit Management program.

Course description:

470.728 –Fundamentals of Nonprofits & Nonprofit Management : The goal of this course is to convey the history, size and impact of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector while providing the fundamentals of nonprofit management. In the United States, the flourishing of nonprofit initiative is intertwined with our country's legal and tax systems, the needs of the nation in wartime, interest groups addressing social and economic inequities, the federal role in social service delivery and foreign aid, rising wealth, and perceived threats to internal security. Successful nonprofits today must have strong management systems in place to assure quality programs for service and impact. These systems include management of finances, human resources, information technology, marketing, performance measures and other aspects of operations. The course will help the student understand the current thinking regarding "best practices" in managing and improving nonprofit organizations and appreciate the interplay of environmental and organizational factors that influence managerial decision-making. Throughout the course, there will be a comparative perspective that looks at the scope and status of nongovernmental organizations in other countries and the influences on those organizations by their own governments, foreign aid, and international philanthropy. Many of the principles recommended as "best practice" can be applied to nongovernmental organizations in other countries as well. This course uses a simulation pedagogy centered around one core assignment where students actively conceptualize and build their own nonprofit. This is the first course for the MA in Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Management and Certificate in Nonprofit Management.
