Job Description:

In collaboration with head coaches and athletic administrative staff, assistant coaches plan practices to teach, encourage and develop student athlete skills and game techniques. Responsible for developing in athletes an understanding of proper nutrition, personal health and safe strength development. Teaches 2-3 physical education courses annually. Identifies and recruits athletically and academically qualified student-athletes, scouts opponents, manages team travel, organizes community service activities and maintains parent and alumni communication. Coaches will demonstrate commitment to the W&L philosophy by emphasizing academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field.

Essential Functions:
  • Coaches team members individually and in groups, and demonstrates game techniques. Manages designated skill development areas or groups of positions. Develops and recommends strategy, teaches theoretical skill and position assignments. 20%

  • Plans coaching and practice sessions in accordance with Conference and university regulations. 10%

  • Teaches 2-3 physical education courses annually as required for student graduation criteria. Substitute teaches as needed when requested by Head Coach and Director of PE. 10%

  • Promotes the athletics program and specific sport through community events, camps and public speaking. Teaches athletic skills and development through local youth programming. 3%

  • Mentors and advises student athletes on personal health, strength training, and nutrition. 10%

  • Recruits quality prospective student-athletes and ensures timely submission of their academic records for admissions. 40%

  • Ensures compliance with all Association, Conference, and University rules by athletes and supporting staff.

  • Communicates consistently with head-coaches, administration, and peers about program goals, status, and needs.

  • Schedules and manages team travel, including lodging, transportation and meal arrangements in accordance with budgetary restrictions. 5%

  • Serves as an event manager for home contests. 2%

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree and collegiate playing experience required. Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field. Role models appropriate behavior and conduct to support the image and reputation of the athletics program. Strong understanding of various coaching techniques and a willingness to learn new methods of instruction. Must possess a valid drivers license.

Work Schedule: Work schedule includes traditional work hours as well as nights and weekends.

Position Terms: This is a full-time benefits eligible term appointment with the work schedule beginning January 11, 2022 concluding on May 31, 2022. The minimum anticipated salary is $18,000 for this 5-month position, disbursed in equal monthly installments from January-May, 2022. An earlier start date will be considered.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.

Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
