Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track assistant professor positions in Public Relations. The start date for these positions is August 22, 2022.

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise or interest in topic areas that complement one or more of the research and teaching specialization(s) in the department. This may include social media and public relations, social media analytics, public relations and diversity, public relations management, crisis communication, international public relations, and public relations ethics.

Compelling candidates will indicate aptitude and/or promise for exemplary teaching, whether through prior university teaching experience or similar professional roles mentoring/supervising young public relations practitioners, in the topics above. Courses that complement the individual’s expertise or specialization would also be considered.

The successful candidates will need to show potential for conducting academic scholarship or industry-related creative activity/research that will position the hire as a well-known expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected. Qualifications
Master’s degree. A Ph.D. degree in communication or a related field is preferred. Job Specific Qualifications
Professional experience in public relations is highly desirable, as is demonstrated leadership through professional and academic work. Responsibilities
The ideal candidates should be able to integrate profession-based learning experiences into courses via field experiences or projects, teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and engage in scholarly research/creative activity by maintaining an active research agenda in the candidate’s area of expertise. These hires will be expected to contribute to service-related initiatives, including academic and career advising of students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/professional outreach.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service, and will be prepared to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. About the Public Relations Department at Newhouse

The Department offers the following degrees: A Bachelor of Science in Public Relations; a Master of Science in Public Relations; a Master of Science in Communications Management (executive); and a Master of Arts in Public Diplomacy and Global Communications (a joint degree with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs).

Additionally, the Department houses the William P. Doescher Lab for Advertising and Public Relations and is home to the Real Chemistry/Newhouse Emerging Insights Lab and the PAN ePortfolio Portal, created in partnership with PAN Communications and Weiss Center for Social Commerce.

The Public Relations Student Society of America chapter at Syracuse University is an alpha chapter established in the mid-1960s with more than 200 members, and is home to Hill Communications, an award-winning, PRSSA -affiliated, student-run public relations agency.

The Department is also home to numerous award-winning students and faculty, including Fulbright scholars, PRSA Gold Key Award for Excellence in Academics winners, Bateman Competition honorable mention, Real Chemistry ambassadors, and the LAGRANT Foundation Scholarship winners.
