Brief Statement of Duties:

The Northern Michigan University (NMU) School of Clinical Sciences (SOCS) is seeking a tenure track Assistant Professor or continuing contract eligible Instructor to teach undergraduate courses beginning in August of 2022. We seek a credentialed clinical laboratory professional whose teaching responsibilities potentially include, but are not limited to, instruction for the laboratory components of Phlebotomy, Introduction to Diagnostic Sciences, Microscopy and Laboratory Techniques, Urine and Body Fluid Analysis, Hematology, Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, and Diagnostic Microbiology. The successful candidate will also be responsible for laboratory management, advising students, curriculum development, recruiting of students, professional development, and participation in accreditation processes. The NMU School of Clinical Sciences is the only university in the United States that harbors four NAACLS accredited programs; medical laboratory technician (MLT) at the associate degree level and medical laboratory science (MLS), cytogenetics (CG), diagnostic molecular science (DMS) at the bachelor’s degree level. The department also offers an ASCP approved microbiology technologist bachelor’s degree program and collaborates with hospital-based programs to offer bachelor level degrees in histology and cytology. This is a campus-based position.

Discipline / Degree Area:

Clinical laboratory science, biological science or related discipline

Required Specialized Training/Certifications:

Assistant Professor: The candidate must have an earned doctoral or MS degree in clinical laboratory science, biological science or a closely related science discipline from an accredited institution plus ASCP (or equivalent) MLS or Technologist certification. Candidates with a PhD in a biological science discipline will be given preference.

Instructor: The candidate must have bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, biological science or a closely related field from an accredited institution plus ASCP (or equivalent) MLS or Technologist certification. Candidates with a master’s degree in education, administration, or management are preferred.

Ability to effectively communicate with students, peers, clinical affiliates, and administration.
Knowledge of curriculum development and delivery principles.
Ability to teach traditional face to face lectures and lab-based classes.
Ability to teach on-line classes.
Knowledge of laboratory management and logistics.
Ability to advise students.
Knowledge of clinical internship requirements and processes.
Knowledge of accreditation processes.
Evidence of on-going professional development.
Evidence of relevant clinical laboratory work experience.
Ability to communicate with students and faculty peers.

Teaching experience in a NAACLS accredited program.
Work experience in a clinical laboratory that trains CLS students.
Clinical coordinator experience in an MLT or MLS program.

Proficient with Microsoft office suite software.
