Position Director of Health Education and Wellness Full Time/Part Time Full Time Job Type Regular Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Student Affairs Office-the Dean of Students, the Director of Health Education and Wellness is responsible for the administrative oversight and leadership for all collegiate health education and wellness and provides direction in support of the mission, vision, and goals of the University. The Director of Health Education and Wellness oversees the Center for Advocacy Resources Education and Support ( CARES ). The Director of Health Education and Wellness directs, plans, implements and evaluates prevention programming, outreach activities, and events. Additionally, the Director of Health Education and Wellness will develop a peer health education curriculum and lead the peer health education program. The Director of Health Education and Wellness collaborates with other campus and community groups to identify collegiate wellness concerns and utilizes best practices to establish and lead efforts aimed at increasing understanding of collegiate health and wellness, decreasing stigma, and creating a campus culture supportive of help-seeking behaviors. Focused on evidence-based and innovative strategies, the Director of Health Education and Wellness, will work collaboratively to lead, implement, and institutionalize population based health education and wellness initiatives.

In an effort to support the wellness of the overall student community, the NMHU division of Student Affairs recognizes that student well-being needs to be viewed within the context of holistic development, the larger community, and as a comprehensive prevention and education program that is sensitive to health disparities, the causes of health disparities and the impact on the NMHU community and various minoritized communities. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead, plan, and implement comprehensive wellness and prevention programming and events in accordance with evidence-based strategies that address collegiate wellness concerns – topics include: mental health, physical and nutritional health, substance use, violence prevention (sexual harassment/assault, stalking, domestic violence), bystander intervention, mindfulness, resiliency and growth mindset, flourishing, goal setting, empathy skill building, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, eating disorders, stress, self-care, and other wellness related topics;
  • Assess health education needs, trends and program impacts using appropriate assessment tools and research;
  • Direct, plan, and implement wellness trainings and workshops that have a high likelihood of achieving measurable improvements in health behaviors and/or student success;
  • Design, articulate, and enact a vision for the University that values collegiate health and well-being and inspire others to share a vision that values the health of all members of the campus community;
  • Strategically collaborate with all campus departments, especially the student health center, student success center, Highlands Undergraduate Enrichment, athletics, faculty, other student affairs departments, campus police, and the Dean of Students;
  • Develop training curriculum for the peer health educators program, as well as recruit, train, and direct peer health educators;
  • Stay current on national trends, best practices, and relevant research across disciplines;
  • Exceptional presentation skills and verbal communication skills;
  • Maintain online platforms used to engage with students;
  • Serve as a member of the NMHU Student Behavior Intervention and Support Team;
  • Supervises and leads staff positions, student employees, and works directly with student health center staff on a daily basis in a shared office space;
  • Facilitate communication/teamwork among staff;
  • Oversee, monitor, maintain, initiate, and approve expenditures on the program’s budget;
  • Maintain regular attendance;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned;
Minimum Job Requirements
  • EDUCATION : Master’s Degree in Health, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Student Affairs Administration, or a related field.

  • EXPERIENCE : 5 years of experience working with and educating students in an institution of higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with minorities, low-income students, students from diverse backgrounds and students with disabilities;
  • Experience in higher education or advising and providing direction to students;
  • Experience creating and providing educational content;
  • Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES ), Master Certified Health Education Specialist ( MCHES ), Certified in Public Health ( CPH ) designation, or eligible to become certified;
Special Conditions for Eligibility
  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, holidays, odd hours, and emergency calls.
  • Must be willing to work in a shared office space with others outside of department.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to students in crisis and coordinate services directly with student health center staff;
  • Knowledge of the college environment;
  • Ability to create environments that are conducive to learning and engaging others;
  • Ability to be a strong team leader/supervisor and foster morale and motivation amongst staff;
  • Knowledge of evidence based collegiate wellness programs;
  • Knowledge of New Mexico and federal statutes;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion in dealing with student confidentiality;
  • Ability to interpret policy and procedures;
Physical Demands
  • Repetitive hand motion and prolonged use of computer.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
Working Environment
  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
