English Instructor—Composition and Technical Communication

Job Description Summary

The Department of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS) at Florida Polytechnic University invites applications for a full-time English instructorship to begin January 2022. This full-time, non-tenure-track faculty position will have an initial two-year contract with the possibility for two-year renewals, and a path toward promotion to Senior Instructor.

The Department of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences supports the University’s mission to serve students and industry through research and teaching that employs methodologies fundamental to humanities study: problem-solving; analytic, creative, and critical thinking; communicative clarity; evidence-based argument; and more. Through rigorous multidisciplinary approaches to research, communication, and other scholarly work, we contribute to the critical frameworks needed to solve human problems through industry, science, and engineering and set the foundation for civil dialogue and an informed, engaged citizenry.

English faculty at Florida Poly provide writing-intensive instruction that builds out our students’ abilities to communicate complex topics and problems effectively and for intended purposes. Instructors are expected to deliver courses in composition, technical and professional communication at lower and upper level, contribute to the Department’s Writing Services program that supports student and STEM faculty writing, and collaborate on developing a coherent, versatile curriculum that challenges and inspires students and gives them a well-spring of intellectual resources that supports their continuing growth while facilitating a competitive advantage in the workforce.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach a 4/4 load of first-year composition and professional & technical communication courses
  • Provide coordinating support for introductory courses
  • Collaborate with other program faculty members engaged in similar efforts
  • Facilitate delivery of writing services center to support students and faculty
  • Engage in department, program, and university service activities
  • Hold regular office hours
  • Effectively use the learning management system and instructional technology regardless of delivery modality
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA in English, Rhetoric, Technical Communication, or a closely related field by January 2022 from a regionally accredited institution
  • At least two years of experience teaching first-year composition and/or technical communication
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD in English, Rhetoric, Technical Communication, or a closely related field by January 2022 from a regionally accredited institution
  • At least four years of experience teaching first-year composition and/or technical communication
  • Writing Center experience
  • Curriculum design and assessment experience

EXPECTED STARTING SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
