Job Description
Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking applicants for a tenure track faculty position as a Phytochemical/Functional Food Chemist in the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST). Position will include working on characterization, quantification, and efficacy evaluation of dietary bioactive compounds present in Virginia, national, and global agricultural and biological products and how these foods impact human health. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with faculty in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, the Molecular and Cellular Biology Interdisciplinary Program, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, and other academic units across the University.
Responsibilities
This is a 9-month tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with primary responsibilities in research and secondary responsibilities in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an impactful research and teaching program focused on phytochemical/functional food chemistry. The individual will develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding, with an emphasis on phytochemical/functional chemistry as it is related to food composition and human health. Areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to: determination of phytochemicals in biological materials, evaluation of potential physiological benefits of phytochemicals to human health using human, animal, and/or in vitro models, evaluation of food processing approaches on phytochemical profiles, and discovery and/or screening of novel phytochemicals as functional ingredients for food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. The individual will be expected to collaborate with faculty in the FST Department and across the University. The individual is also expected to achieve sustainable funding sources to support his/her research program, develop and sustain relationships with industry leaders who are developing innovative functional food products. Global engagement is important as the incumbent’s career advances, and will contribute to the expansion of Virginia Tech’s reputation in this domain.
The individual is expected to develop and teach undergraduate/graduate course(s) related to the successful applicant’s expertise. The individual will recruit and mentor graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) and undergraduate students and will be expected to serve on department, college and university committees, as well as participate in appropriate professional organizations.
Required Qualifications
Doctoral degree in food science, food technology, nutrition, or related fields; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct scholarly research; Demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom setting and commitment to quality student education; Strong commitment to create an environment that fosters diversity and inclusion. Position requires occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings; Completion of criminal background check required
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to write competitive research proposals; post-doctoral research experience; demonstrated ability to develop and sustain relationships with human health related industries.
