Job Description

SUMMARY: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, conduct a variety of specialized health screenings; coordinate health education events; maintain displays and health promotion materials; perform clerical duties in support of the college health program and goals including supply ordering and acting as a liaison with college community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintain strict confidentiality on all departmental matters and health care concerns, in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.

Receive and screen visitors and phone calls; refer to appropriate staff members; take messages as necessary; receive sort and route mail.

Coordinate communication with other district departments and personnel, students, educational institutions, vendors, other outside organizations and the public.

Draft requests for contract materials, prepare appropriate accounting materials.

Prepare process and review financial and statistical forms, reports, records and information; maintain accurate budget records and prepare budget transfers as appropriate.

Order and maintain office supplies; prepare and process purchase requisitions according to approved procedures; schedule maintenance and repair of equipment.

Analyze emergency situations and reports to Health Services Supervisor or Public Safety. Provide direction and communication to students, family, and staff during emergency situations as required.

Operate a variety of health testing devices including occulometer, audiology screener, blood pressure equipment, venipuncture equipment, body composition screener, etc. Draw blood and other samples as needed.

Schedule, plan and coordinate health promotion events including presentations, classes, workshops, training, orientations, vaccination clinics, seminars, etc.

Maintain health-related bulletin boards, displays, health education materials, web site, brochures, and other publicity and marketing information.

Facilitate and attend various campus and community health promotion planning meetings as assigned by Health Services Supervisor and Dean.

Administer basic or emergency first aid under the direction of a licensed nurse.

Evaluate and arrange for appropriate transportation of ill or injured persons as necessary.

Assist in the preparation and processing of student accident and workers' compensation forms.

Act as representative for international students who request help with insurance claims.

Document and report on-campus accidents and incidents to appropriate authorities.

Provide information and assistance to students and staff concerning health problems, services, insurance, counseling, vaccination requirements, and related matters.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Perform related duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Create, maintain, update, and revise hourly hire forms and other hourly employee information.

Operate and maintain a variety of office machines and equipment including computers, cash registers, scanners, fax, and copy machines.

Daily office cash deposits.

Assist in the training of peer health educators.

Provide direction to volunteers and interns.

Assist the Supervisor in the preparation of Master Plan, Strategic plan, Program Review, and Student Service Outcomes and Survey.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Modern principles, practices, procedures, regulations, and equipment used in health office.

  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

  • Computer Skills including: Microsoft Office, Scheduling systems and information systems.

  • Learn, apply, and explain rules, regulations, district policies and procedures related to health office.
  • Operate a variety of health testing equipment such as blood pressure equipment, vision screener, body fat screener, audiology screener, venipuncture equipment, etc.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment used in assigned area which may include a personal computer, typewriter, computer terminal, 10-key, copier, scanner, fax, etc.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Respond to students, staff, instructors, and public with courtesy and tact.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Promote health education events.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment.
  • Work with and respect people of diverse ethnic and cultural background


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to: graduation from high school and a minimum of two year's experience as an assistant to medical or nursing staff in a health clinic, physician's office, occupational or school health center. 2-year degree or equivalent coursework in Business, Marketing or related field preferred though not required.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Current certification of training in audiology,
  • Current California Phlebotomy Technician License
  • Current BLS/CPR/AED certification
  • Current first aid certification


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Health Services Office environment subject to exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, human body fluids. Subject to frequent interruptions and interactions with students, staff or the general public.
