As part of UA, the mission of the Center for Career Advancement is to educate Bucknellians in the art of integrating an individual's career goals with their varied academic and life experiences. We encourage students and alumni to learn the process of making informed and thoughtful career decisions by providing diverse learning experiences, quality resources, career expertise and the opportunity to create meaningful connections with an engaged university community.

The Career Coach position is primarily responsible for assisting current undergraduates by providing career coaching, business etiquette and professional skills development, assessments, programs and resources to help individuals move their career interests forward. This role will also lead efforts in the ongoing development and cultivation of an industry career community (Business & Consulting) and related employer development work. Additional program management responsibilities may include supervising the CCA Career Interns, co-leading the Bucknell job shadow program for students or managing the senior transitions series, Life After Bucknell. This position reports to the Associate Director, Industry Connections & Experiences.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Coach current undergraduate students individually or in groups on career-related issues including career/major decision-making, internship and job search strategies, resume writing, cover letter writing, interview preparation, networking strategies, and professional etiquette and appropriate behavior
  • Advise students in creating career action plans, and identifying current knowledge and competency gaps, suggesting experiential learning and other strategies to complete career goals and milestones
  • Advise students on effective approaches for maintaining a professional online presence, including e-portfolio management, and professional profiles on on-line platforms such as Handshake and LinkedIn
  • Develop and teach workshops, seminars and on-line tutorials on various career issues that may include career planning, job search techniques, and employment-related concerns
  • Conduct employment and graduate school practice/mock interviews
  • Offer and review various career assessment tool results/interpretations for students
  • Utilize baseline metrics and evaluation processes to measure program and learning objectives
  • Work closely with faculty, advisors and student development partners to identify opportunities for collaboration
  • Staff weekly Drop-In Hours and on call schedule as needed
  • Keep current on career coaching/ counseling methodologies and employment trends and best practices through personal research and professional development opportunities, share research and information with the Center for Career Advancement team and the university community
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of career development educational resources, web content and marketing/promotional materials as needed

    Career Communities:
  • Lead and oversee the development and launch of a Business & Consulting career community
  • Develop regular promotion and messaging campaigns to students and campus community regarding activities of the career community
  • Research, explore and, as appropriate, recommend and/or implement new and strategic ways to educate students in intentional group career learning, programming and interactions
  • Develop metrics to assess success, identify gaps and show impact of career community activities each semester

    Employer Development:
  • Work closely with the Employer Engagement team, researching top employers in leading industries and reviewing lists of alumni/parents at these organizations. Determine who to approach for initial conversation to introduce Bucknell
  • Identify at least five new organizations per month of interest to Bucknell students to explore to build relationships and facilitate recruiting opportunities
  • Plan and coordinate in-person visits and/or oversee referrals for suggested next steps with career center employer development & recruiting staff

    Relationship Management & Communication:
  • Collaborate with upperclass students to provide career preparation programs for younger students.
  • Collaborate with key College of Management, College of Engineering and College of Arts & Sciences faculty and staff to provide career preparation, search strategies and networking programs for students
  • Partner with UA colleagues who work with alumni and parents in assigned career community
  • Answer emails and phone calls in a timely fashion and a professional manner
  • Continually monitor feedback regarding events and adjust programs as necessary

  • Attend department and team meetings and actively participate in strategic planning conversations
  • Attend divisional and university meetings
  • Maintain confidential student, alumni and employer records, utilizing the CCA's database system and the university's database
  • Participate in student and alumni events, such as career fairs, networking events and large-scale university weekends (Family/Reunion/Homecoming/Admissions)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • Two (2) years of professional experience which can include higher education, university career services, human resources/corporate recruitment, business, consulting or a related field
  • Experience advising college students or adults in career planning initiatives and/or job search strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career assessment tools, including ability to review and interpret results
  • Strong knowledge of and skills in LinkedIn and basic awareness of other social media platforms used in career networking
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative, take initiative, and communicate effective with a wide range of personalities
  • Demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for the relationship between the liberal arts and employability
  • Demonstrates proficiency with technology such as database functions/reports, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google suite of products, internet/email usage, etc.
  • Valid US driver's license

    Other Requirements:
    This position requires occasional evening and weekend work to support UA's events including blocks of time for major events such as Family Weekend, Reunion Weekend, and Homecoming, and other event support as required. Staff should mark their calendars for major events and events in their department. Exceptions require supervisory approval. Also required is a commitment to attend, participate, facilitate or lead on-campus and off-campus events/activities outside of normal business hours as appropriate.

    Exempt Employees:
    Exempt employees are required to work as much time as is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the position without additional compensation, even if the work is performed beyond standard work hours.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Human Resources, MBA or other business related advanced degree
  • Experience working in a college setting
  • Knowledge of recruiting software
  • Experience with a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system such as Blackbaud or Handshake
